That's easy. Go find some tips (pen tips will do) and put them on your sound card. Problem solved. ____________________

This tbh... though you might want to look at the latest X-Fi cards And now I need to take a 5 minute nap before I have the energy to post again. |

I suppose I should make a serious reply. I'm very happy with my Asus Xonar DX, and the entire Xonar range is reportedly very good. ____________________

Well, Vista doesn't support hardware accelerated audio. Emu 0404 is cool if you're into quality stereo. Otherwise I would go with a regular and widely used card like the X-Fi.

The Xonar range are fully Vista compatible. I'm running mine in Windows 7 which is basically Vista 1.1. ____________________

not entirely correct. X-Fi isn't properly supported in Vista, mainly because Creative refuses to write working drivers for them that actually enable their advanced features, but the Asus Xonar range functions perfectly. So one of those is probably the best choice.

Didn't some guy write some decent unofficial drivers? I know Creative threatened to sue, and got him to take them down from his website, but I think they're still floating around as torrents etc. Then again though, not much point buying a card that isn't officially compatible. Isn't onboard audio supposed to be much improved these days on a decent motherboard? Does a soundcard make a noticeable improvement for just regular use (just listening to music, movies etc)? and/or are there other reasons beyond just sound quality for getting a soundcard?

I'm pretty sure that turned out to be a hoax. The letters the guy got threatening to sue didn't come from Creative at all. Unless I'm thinking of something else... ____________________

Edited by: Sazkyen on 13/09/2009 18:23:59 Well, I'm not an expert on this, so here's where I found this info about removed hardware accelerated audio:
"Many former parts of DirectX API were deprecated in the latest DirectX SDK and will be preserved for compatibility only: DirectInput was deprecated in favor of XInput, DirectSound was deprecated in favor of the Cross-platform Audio Creation Tool system (XACT) and lost support for hardware accelerated audio, since Vista audio stack renders sound in software on the CPU. The DirectPlay DPLAY.DLL was also removed and was replaced with dplayx.dll; games that rely on this DLL must duplicate it and rename it to dplay.dll." Linkage

I would say no creative and definitely not x-fi, have never had so many hardware problems in my life.
Make sure it has no conflicts with your motherboard or you will be in a world or irritation as your PC BSOD's whenever you're getting into a game.

Edited by: KingsGambit on 14/09/2009 12:21:29 Though it's at the high end of the price range for sound cards, I'm using an Auzentech X-Fi Prelude which I bought almost as soon as it was released. It supports Dolby Digital Live, whatever the DTS equivalent is called and all forms of EAX (though on Vista/Win 7 you need to use ALchemy for this as they don't have DirectSound anymore). The sound quality is exceptional and it has every input/output you can think of. It can also process audio at studio level quality if you have any interest in music production. The drivers are frequently improved and it works fine one Vista/Win 7 X64.
I wanted desperately to buy something other than Creative, who've had a stranglehold on PC audio for so long because of EAX. This card was perfect for that...incredible sound quality for music and the like, but EAX environmental audio still works perfectly, and it's not Creative! I've got it paired with a set of Logitech Z5500 5.1 speakers, sooo goooood. -------------

I hate my x-fi with the burning fury of a thousand suns, really should have known better as Creative wouldn't know a Big Berta from a Vista driver. So many driver issues, but at least I finally got Vista to actually remember my mic boost settings.

Don't go with the vista driver but actually install the creative one, I don't have issues with my mic settings at all.

I meant the Creative drivers *for* Vista, obviously not the now two years old default vista sound drivers.

X-Fi cards are horribly over-hyped and are, in reality, pretty ****ty (primarily just because Creative is apparently terribad at coding drivers).
Honestly if you don't have a fairly expensive sound setup, you aren't going to actually notice any difference over your motherboard's onboard audio. If you don't have onboard, I would honestly just buy whatever card looks alright for like $20 or $30 (USD).

I wouldn't buy anything that has "extreme" or "gamer" in it, only because you'll be paying alot of money for something that isn't worth it. Tbh, bog standard sound card would do, they all have 5.1 compatibility these days, you should only buy a good serious sound card if you do music production imo. ---------------------------

Can someone recommend a good network card for my computer? Oh... right... they're onboard these days just like sound. Why bother?
For more enjoyment and greater efficiency, consumption is being standardized.

Because onboard sound is not as high quality as sound card sound. Despite popular opinion, the difference is noticeable. ____________________

Plus there are certain activities that Warrant the extra money for a dedicated sound card. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008
