How do you veteren PvPers supplement your income?
Granted I'm new to PVP, but ransoms and the drops that survive when my opponent pops aren't enough to buy new skills and upgrade ships & modules. I suppose that with insurance payouts, I could PvP indefinately with the same cheap ship and fittings, but how do you grow enough welath to progress and upgrade?
Or do I just need to get better at PvP?

mine, mission, rat, manufacture, trade, haul.
It takes blind luck or major aversion to risk+patience for pvp to payout. For the time you spent waiting for the perfect target you could have made more ratting.
99.99% don't make isk from pvp.

Just fly only insured T1 ships so replacing them is as simple as tripping on a random BS rat at a gate, =P.
Being half-serious here, it is pretty hard to lose money if you fly cheap-ass ships.

I normally operate in 0.0, but 1 or 2 days I week I jump to a clone in highsec to run missions. I can make about 100M in 2 nights of grinding.
Your income and losses may vary, but there's no safer way to make ISK than running level 4 missions.

Quoting for emphasis. The only people who make money with pvp are the ones not taking any risk and even then you're better off having a specific income job.

The only PVE I do to supplement income is lowsex plexes. Apart from that, ransoms (especially pod ransoms) and scams make up a good deal of income. Also, it's a lot harder in the beginning but loot drops, especially t2 drops can be a good money earner, since they can be sold for slightly higher prices in lowsec, trade skills will help here. Scams are a pretty nice way to make some income without much effort too.

Say you fly a t1 frigate fitted with some t2 mods. The total cost should be under 5-6mil. With careful target selection, you should be able to get 2-3 t2 drops from the loot, which means your ship+ some mods are paid for. Couple that with pod ransoms if you can catch them (a lot of people have at least +4's plugged in, and 50mil for a pod you think has +4's will pay for 10 fully fitted ships). As long as you average 2-3 kills for every ship loss, you should be making a decent profit. It hurts more losing t2 ships though, so keep your ships cheap in the beginning.
tl;dr ransom, scam, light ratting/plex, sell loot

Remember that PvP is a negative sum game when it comes to wealth, so on aggregate, PvPers must loose ISK.
