Looking to understand how the double small b-type DS boosters are able to tank a l4 when (in eft) the def efficiency is like 300 or worse

2 reasons: with rat specific hardeners it's more than 300, and you don't need much tank if you have enough gank.

Edited by: Pantload on 15/09/2009 00:05:27 Just my 2 cents, but the amount of tanked dps doesn't need to be as high as what conventional wisdom seems to dictate. I did tons of missions in a CNR with the 2x Pithii B-Type smalls and it works great. It's slightly more shield-boosting than you would get with 1x T2 Large Booster. I found that a lot of the time I was only using just one of boosters. With lots of damage output and aggro control its no problem at all. I've even done the Blockade and Worlds Collide with that setup. FWIW.
Cheers, PL
*quick edit* That tank will possibly struggle or fail in the very hardest missions like AE bonus room or Enemies Abound 5. Although there may be some folks who can testify to doing it. Aside from that its more than enough usually if you have LOTS of gank.

That's because you need to know how to run missions. Examples: -I fly a NM against Bloods/Sanshas. I have XLSB. I don't use it, but it's there for oh-s@#$ moments. My gank is my tank. -I used to fly a semi-passive CNR (passive shield recharge with active hardeners). EFT defense was around 250-350. Yet I was able to do pretty much every mission without XLSB, except for EA5 and AEBonus. And no, I didn't use stupid tactics like kiting out to 100km or whatnot. Just sat there and shot stuff, letting passive shield recharge handle the tank.

At max skills, an unfitted Raven generates a little over 19 cap/second at peak.
2x Pithi B-Type Small Shield Booster : 2x 65 HP boosted every 2 seconds, so 65 HP/second with just 52tf/4MW taken and at roughly 16 cap/sec drain. One Large Shield Booster II plus a Shield Boost Amplifier II : 240*1.36 HP boosted every 4 seconds, or 81.6 HP/second, but with 170tf/166MW and 36 cap/sec drain. Let's not even mention the XL booster version, ouch, on all counts.
A T2 hardener eats up 2 cap/second, and you'll want at least 3, so a 22 cap/sec drain with the dual Pith boosters (but over 42 cap/sec with a large T2 booster), nearly double the capacitor needed, which has to come from somewhere (usually, it would mean power diagnostics, CPRs, CCC/SMC rigs or other such things), not to speak of the significant CPU/grid savings... which needs the Pith setup can focus a lot more on effective damage application (missile range rigs if using torps or rigor rigs if using cruise missiles, more damage mods, target painter or extra hardener, damage control instead of capacitor mod, etc).
The pretty weak tank will have to be compensated by an increased killing rate and carefull aggro management and threat elimination - overall, that means you can handle the same missions, but at an increased speed (and risk, in case something goes wrong).
