Hello fellow Linux users. I am planning to get myself a new toy. Primaly it is laptop for work, and lots of traveling, so i prefer smaller laptops 13.3" to 14" inch form factor (like lenovo T400, X200s, U350), and these tend to come with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD graphics.
I know that when it comes to Linux on laptops, there is a golden rule: "If you want Linux to work well on your laptop - buy one with everything intel inside".
I am interested if it would be enough to run EVE well enough to do some basic things like editing market orders, changing skills, and if i could even do some lv4 missions with decent fps it would be great for me.
So far Lenovo IdeaPad U350 is my favorite as it tends to offer a great deal of features for it's price, but i am open minded and would appreciate offers for other simmilar laptops as well.
If Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD chip has to little power to run EVE, it would be awesome if someone could point any smaller laptop with Nvidia chip, but so far i was not able to find any.
Regards, Miya Miya

everything runs incredibly slow, and the drivers sucks so badly they cant even switch to 8 bit and 640x480

Thanks for the warning about GMA 500, i'll keep that in mind.
Also i just had a quick look in wikipedia, and i found out that the 4500MHD is identical to its desktop cousin, the X4500HD. And it supports supports DirectX 10 and Shader Model 4.0 features. Intel designed the GMA X4500 to be 200% faster than the GMA 3100 (G33 chipset) in 3DMark06 performance and 70% faster than the GMA X3500 (G35 chipset).
That sounds promissing to me, but still would be awesome to have a confirmation from a person who actually tried to run EVE on 4500MHD, so i would know is it actually enough to do somemething in game without being lagged to death :)

Most users have so far been unable run eve on the intel graphic chips with some degree of playability.
Winehq has some nice threads about intel cards and the drivers. While the drivers are working out of the box, it doesn't mean that any1 cares about something like 3d performance.

Well my friend has older laptop with intel chip (Compaq nx6110) and it is possible to run EVE at bearable level, you can chagne skills, edit market orders, travel, even done some lv4's. But yet again he uses windows xp on his laptop, i want to run linux and only linux :)
Anyways, thank you for pointing into Winehq, i'll stick my nose there too, bit later today.

Intel driver under Linux use MESA for 3D.
Mesa don't support OpenGL > 1.5 and Wine require OpenGL 2.0+ so, you have your answer.
Intel user must wait after Gallium3D and its.. far to be ready.

The intel chipset problems are very temporary because there is a lot of construction for improvents going on - it was fast before 2.6.29 and should be back to old speed soon enough with more recent kernels.
For Ubuntu users Intrepid is better for Intel graphics cards than Jaunty - dunno if the 2.6.31 kernel in Karmic is already back to old speed or not (don't use intel graphics myself - only following what's going on in forums). --- Save the forum: Think before you post. I'm sorry but IMO you should NOT pick a laptop with Intel video. There are plenty of models with Nvidia cards. As for laptops and games, there are dedicated gaming laptops, such as Toshiba's Qosmio line.
If you want a recommendation according to your needs, then i would pick ZaReason's UltraLapSR which comes with Nvidia and Ubuntu @ 13.3"
Btw that "golden rule" is not true. You have to double check each component to see if its compatible or not, which is why choosing a preinstalled machine from ZaReason or System76 eases things very much. -- Ubuntu Eve Online install Guide Athlon X2 6000 Nvidia 9800 GT Ubuntu x86_64 |

I have a notbeook with intel graphics adapter. I play on a desktop though. I think the people who put this thing into computers in 2009 should be punished.
It's a virtual video card. Considering the price of notebooks and the low price at which decent but not the latest mobile gfx chips are available, it's a crime against humanity to use these things that are weaker than entry level gfx cards 10 years ago.
