Edited by: Vir Gnarus on 16/09/2009 22:01:00 Been on eve for some time though, yet probably best to ask this question givin my chars are still pretty low in the SP area.
I've been introduced to 0.0 through the means of my corp joinin an alliance which ultimately led us to pack our bags and head towards 0.0 in our new home. While this isn't a prob for most of em seeing as they all got BS or equivalent and skill behind their belts, I myself felt sorta awkward moving in a t1 frig trying to make ends meat. With only 10-15 mil worth in assets and a cruiser with t1 mods, is it better to just simply move back to empire? I would love to be part of 0.0 activities, but if my char is just gonna sit around twiddle thumbs while everyone else does the work, or get popped in one volley of even so much as a sansha rat, what does it bother? Any opportunities for someone like myself in 0.0?

Definitely was my first option, though I'm afraid they're already busy doing warfare. Moreso is they can't see any niche to put me in fleet since I currently don't have the funds (yet I do have the SP) to purchase T2 frigs.
Obviously money is a big thing, and I'm wondering if 0.0 will be more a sink than a faucet.

You'd make more picking up their trash then in empire.
For example, get a t1 hauler and ask the local ratters for permission to loot wrecks once the belt is clear. Cost is a mil or two event assuming some t2 mods (mwd, cargo expanders, maybe a warp stab). Warp to a belt, if no one is ratting and there are no rats, clean up the wrecks/cans. Make maybe 100k per mod that aren't worth their time to clean up. So there are ways to support yourself until you have the skills to rat.
For pvp activity accounts more than having the "right ship". There are roles for small ships. You could take a t1 destroyer (thrasher) and target pods + small stuff in fights. A rifter makes a good t1 frig to learn on. Blackbirds even with t1 make great ecm platforms for about 7-8 mil or so if I remember.
Just takes a bit of creativity and anything beats empire.

If they're busy fighting join in. Fly something cheap and fun like a Vigil, which makes a great tackle frigate. If your Minmatar frigate and navigation skills are good you'll be flying very fast which should nullify many weapons, although watch out for webs and drones obviously. Best of all, you'll lose no face in the event of being destroyed, and will still get to see all the fireworks.
If your corp are busy killing the larger rats or running missions, tag along and nail the smller support vessels. What will kill your fun is losing focus; if you're heart is set in something like manufacturing, don't get distracted with gunnery skills. I've made this mistake myself several (failed) characters ago. Follow you heart; make that fit with whatever plans the older players have. If they're truly friendly, they'll have you along whatever you're flying.

Edited by: Rotnac on 16/09/2009 22:24:33 I would contend that yes, there are, assuming your corp/alliance is a pretty friendly bunch. Goons newbies (who are usually instructed to head to 0.0 as soon as they finish the tutorial) typically salvage wrecks for a ratter, either splitting profits, or just keeping them (if the person agrees of course). If you're someplace with missions (NPC 0.0), they run missions, since lvl1 can be done in small ships. Some mine in cruisers as well. Others provide scouting services for small fees - 0.0 is a dangerous place if you don't have eyes on the other side of a gate. A few will even buy cheap BPOs in empire (for drones or ammo people need, even small mods) and build for profit. This obviously deserves careful checking out (will you build something people will buy, and are you making money), but can be quite profitable - 0.0 production has far higher margins than empire, due to a lack of suppliers and higher risks.
Hopefully one of these sounds good. Several (the salvaging, etc) do rely on having friendly corpmates.
Hope you find 0.0 rewarding!
Edit: lots of posts while making mine say the same as me. And you CAN be useful in fleets, as stated above. Never, ever underestimate the usefulness of a small throwaway tackler ship (which you'll be). Few things are more frustrating than losing a BS because a Rifter had a point on you and was orbiting a few km from you.

One would hope that your corp would provide you with the support needed to make this work.
If you're losing T1 frigs in corp PvP you'd hope they'd help you replace those, and as others said there's plenty of ways for you to work with others to make isk. Do make sure you get electronics V so you can fit a cloak.

Then they are morons! Seriously, even a 2 day old noob can fly a tackler in combat and be useful! If they are set on you being useless unless you are able to throw away T2 ships then they don't understand the game at all... --------------------------------------------

yea any pilot worth a damn would be able to tackle in a t1 frigate.
most of the time just there being a pilot in a fast tackling ship is enough

PvP: T1 frig tackling for the win.
Blackbird cruisers are very effective. How can you tell? Because enemy FCs will call you as primary very early on.
Does your corp do ship replacement? If so, go out there and learn, lose, learn, lose, until you're a winner.
Any decent alliance ought to be able to hand you a stack of t1 frigs and mods to burn through as you learn.
---
Earning power, yes, salvaging and looting wrecks can pay off.
---
You may find that empire is better for isk and less demanding of your time, but for sheer fun, 0.0 is the place to be.

In most circumstances, t1 ships do everything that a t2 ship can (With a couple exceptions such as black ops and stealth bombers). T2 does it better, but that's irrelevant. A tackler is a tackler, an EW ship is an EW ship, etc. If you can't fly with your current corp, find another one.

Some things you can do,
- Fit a ship for PvP anti-frigate purposes, for instance a Caracal. There are quite a few hostile interceptors and AF's roaming about in 0.0.
- Salvage or Haul stuff, either what others have left for you or pherhaps you can assist your corporation or alliance's mining ops. There are alot of people who'd be happy to help out like that.
- Check the stations that they reside in, more often than not there tends to be popular items missing, skills for instance. Buy some cheap (but popular) skillbooks, put in them in your cargo and fly them down to 0.0 for a little profit.
- Kit out a cruiser with some mining lasers and get to mining, if you're close to an alliance held station they usually tend to clear any rats for you quickly incase they spawn. Just keep an eye on local and your alliance intel channel or you will likely get blown up ^^.
- To be perfectly fair though, sounds to me like 0.0 is still a bit too early for you but by all means do try.

^^ Good advice, although I would contend that a day-old newbie, with the right level of corp support, is ready for 0.0. Well, and so long as he's not too attached to his ships (which you should never be - only fly what you can afford to lose).

Hmm, de ja vu all over again:
2004.10.13 05:45:00 Just a note to let you know how I just made $12.2 million isk in just over 2 hrs mining in serp prime area. I did this by myself, no support. Ninja mining all the way. Use an Osprey set up to mine and drop jettison cans at 2 different belts. Mine into 1 can until rats come, about 20 minutes, then warp to other can and continue mining. Again warp to first can when rats come in. Simply put, you need a can at 2 belts and you switch back and forth as the rats come in. when you have a indy full of ore. Bring your indy in to a safe spot, eject and then take your pod to the belt to verify no rats at your ore can. Warp back, grab your indy and make a dash to the can for pick up. It would be best to do this ninja mining in a probe until u get comfortable with doing it. Time is 3 1/2 hrs for same money but its much safer this way until your comfortable with doing it. Selinaia
This is an eve mail that was sent to me by a corp member when I first moved to 0.0 in late 2004. At that time, I had been in game about a month and a half, the largest ship I owned was a thorax (which I didn't have skills to really use), and I was in a very similar situation as the OP was. Ninja mining crokite and bistot was how I made my first 100-200m. I also quickly learned how to fight using T1 frigs in tackle roles - many incursuses were lost to cruise missiles back in the day (in 2004, missiles always hit for full damage unless you went faster than them).
It's easily doable to move to 0.0 as a newb, as long as you're mentally ready for the challenges - and you have a good corp supporting you.

More than that, the sooner a new player gets out into 0.0 the more likely they are to fit in and not get too attached to highsec and the bad habits you get into there.
EVE's history is full of players who told themselves "I don't have enough skillpoints to live in zerosec yet, as soon as I've finished training for Command Ships/T2 large guns/Carrier and Fighters/etc then I'll be ready!" These players, if they ever make the step, normally pour all of their ISK into the new expensive ship they just trained for, fit it horribly, fly out, immediately lose everything to the first gatecamp they see and quit the game.
Being a newbie in 0.0 is about zooming around in a T1 frigate learning how the game works by tackling battleships worth hundreds of times more than yours, and not caring when you get blown up again and again and again because your ships are insured and cost nothing to replace.

And remember that you don't have to choose between empire and nullsec. Get some jump clones, and you can jump back and forth between the two. Weekdays in empire, weekends in nullsec, perhaps.

Edited by: Losmandy on 20/09/2009 18:20:49 Learn to fly an interceptor, tis the most desired ship in small/medium gangs. A good inty pilot can be worth his weight in gold. Be prepared to lose a few though.
After 0.0 life empire will seem tedious in comparison.
