Hi all,
My 3rd day in EVE and I'm working towards finding and selecting a player corporation to join. Only downside is there are SO many choices!
I realize the corp one chooses is laregly dependent on goals and style of play, but can any experienced players offer any general guidelines to follow when choosing a corporation?
For instance, are corporations with more members usually better?
Do Standings matter?

My opinion is that larger corps will be better able to teach you what you need to know.
If I were just starting out again, I'd join EVE University... they attempt to teach new players the ropes of the game. Once you have the game mechanics down pat and a couple hundred k skill points, I'd suggust joining one of the more newbie-friendly corps based in 0.0, such as Everlasting Vendetta. -------------------------------------------- CONCORD: Kneecapping Pilots for Misdemeanors Since 2003 |

The biggest decision is figuring out what you want to do. Decide what kind of a role you want to get into before shopping around for a corporation. Find a corporation that matches what you want to do. If you want to peacably play the mineral markets and concentrate on trading, a pirate corporation operating out in 0.0 space might not be the best choice.
Ask questions about how the corporation operates. What their goals are. How security is handled (a note here, don't join a corp willing to offer you unlimited access to their hangars unless its a very small corp - they're just asking to be robbed). Are they in an alliance (if they are, odds are that someone will hate you for just joining). Are any wars active for the corp? Find out as much as you can about the corp.
On the question of big vs little: The trade off is one of more resources vs more impact on the corp. A large corporation has more resources, but also has less opportunities for advancing. They are usually pretty well staffed with specialized players filling most roles already. They are a good place to learn. as there are often experts in various fields. A small corporation, while usually holding less assets are for you if you want to make a bigger impact in the corp. Small corporations often have gaps in specialties that need filling and often are easier to advance to important positions in.
There's also the issue of players being on. Large corporations typically have more players online at any one time. Smaller corporations need to coordinate better for online times.
Standings towards NPC corporations are important if you plan on doing agent missions. Standings towards player corporations can often tell you a lot about a corp too, such as who they regularly shoot at and who their friends are.
Finally, remember that if you join and it turns out to be a mistake, you can always leave. -D

Most of the small/medium corps are timezone related.
So it might be and option to check where most of a corps members come from. Otherwise you will find yourself alone in the corp at many moments
