Edited by: Heroldyn on 22/09/2009 14:13:56 the sad truth is that on friday evening a horde of monkeys leaked into the server room through a window that was accidently left open from when the servers were stressed and needed fresh air for cooling.
they stole the api as part of their worldwide terrorist campaign against computer game developers in revenge to how badly they saw their race treated in monkey island part 3-5.

Oh come on, Monkey Island 3 wasn't bad. It just wasn't as good as the first two. |

In current news:
Quote: eve api disabled until downtime wednesday 23 september reported by CCP Navigator | 2009.09.22 12:53:36 | NEW
Following the upgrade from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 earlier today, the EVE API will be disabled until downtime on Wednesday 23 September. Our Operations team will use the next 24 hours to monitor Tranquility to ensure that there are no problems following the upgrade at which time the EVE API will be reactivated.
Then again, why look at the news in one click when you can type a whole post.

It's remarkably pathetic they try to save face saying that they don't bring up the api for stability issues. The API shouldn't have to affect the main DB. And for the love of christ!!!! Use a real db product like oracle/db2 or whatever. Your uptimes will thank you.

You don't have to search the forum for it, you could just go to Current News page under the EVE Insider section to the left and look there. That is where all such announcements are put.

db2... sure lol.
sorry, but it is apparant that you don't really have much inside into modern database systems.
microsoft sql server is a very reliable and great to administrate product. we have serveral deployed throughout different customers and they all ran reliable and smooth. additionally the 2005 and 2008 versions provide a very remarkable performance gain compared to the earlier versions. especially when it comes to processing time of complex stored procedures and triggers.

Cry some more. API appeared to give trouble during the 2nd qualifying rounds of the AT so its understandable they are dubious after doing a DB upgrade, they could just remove API altogether if they wanted.
I reiterate, Cry some more.

Thing is probably 90% of the player base have little/0 interest in the alliance tournament and even less participate in it.
On the other hand, most of us make use of the API.
As for the guys getting some interest in my menstrual periods , I recommend getting a life and meeting some girlfriend (perhaps boyfriend is your thing?).

Edited by: OwlManAtt on 22/09/2009 22:13:42 It's been down for three-and-a-half out of the last five days.
I really hope that when we get the new forums/COSMOS stuff, they actually assign a team to maintain the website and API. Right now, it seems like the forums and the API are pet projects that nobody ever has time to work on.
The forums and the API are both incredibly important parts of the EVE environment. It aggravates me to no end that there are apparently NO developer resources expended on them until there are critical issues - and then if they break something unrelated with their knee-jerk spam prevention measures, oh well, it'll stay like that for a few months.
If it continues after the winter expansion/COSMOS, I'll certainly try getting the CSM to bring this up.

Well this is somewhat frustrating... I make a new toon, can't log in for 72 hours to get API keys... Then when I finally can the API is down for another couple of days...
There's really no good reason to have made me wait 3 days to get my API keys... I doubt very much it would be difficult to fix the login page so new toons can get that at least.
Thank you.

Uh.. are we using the same product? Sure ms sql for a small workstation or small office runs along smooth enough. If I had to implement any kind of mission critical DB on 2005 or 2008 I'd run screaming as if all the demons from the seven hells were after me.
I don't know how the EvE guys put up with it. I give em credit for dealing with that total piece of #$^%$% though. I know you'd have to pay me serious gobs of money to deal with that mess.

To the people complaining about MS Sql Server...
I've used pretty much all the major DB products over the years (MS SQL, Oracle, DB/2, PostGres, MySql) and as much as I like to slag MS (Who doesn't) the reality is that Sql Server is the easiest to deploy and use of the whole bunch... And not by a little... By a lot... It's the cheapest unless your counting free DB's... It's plenty fast if your queries are intelligently written...
C'mon... Quit griping...
