Hey, I was thinking the other day about how battle cruisers have a bonus that lets them fit command mods. Also how smaller frigate/cruiser fleets don't have the option to use command links unless you have an off grid booster in a commandship/T3. In general I don't really like the idea of off grid boosting however I am in the process of training up my own T3 command link alt. I'm not sure if I'll even use him that much as I think the idea of having to dualbox an alt in a boost ship and move him around with me kind of taxing and not very fun.
I was just thinking though, wouldn't it be cool if you could have some sort of smaller command ship that needed to be on grid for links to work? Take the destroyer class for instance and have a destroyer that's like a miniature BC class ship with the ability to fit command links. Of course you'd have to have it be limited/have penalties so its not as effective as a fully sized Battlecruiser. You could make it able to fit just a single command link and/or have a penalty so that command links on a destroyer class command ship aren't as effective or have a limited area of effect on your fleet mates. All the while maintaining the regular characteristics of normal destroyers.
Sure you'd be primary and quite squishy but its could be a relatively inexpensive way to give a small frigate/destroyer/cruiser gang a mediocre boost. Hell, if it doesn't cost much more than a normal destroyer then you could have everyone who's got leaderships skills in the fleet fly one for less chance of being primaried. Or you could take the other route and make them a T2 destroyer like interdictors are, more skill intensive and more expensive but perhaps not as easy to kill or not such bad command penalties?
Either way I think its a cool idea to play around with. I like the idea of on-grid command ships/slapping a command link on a couple ships in the fleet to provide boosts rather than having one person burdened with having to dualbox a command alt to provid boosts safely off-grid. |

Tech 1 battlecruisers can fit a single fleet booster, more with command processors. It's not a popular option, though most battlecruisers can easily give up at least 1 high slot for the booster. I'm not sure why people don't use this tactic (especially since battlecruisers are by far the most common ships on pvp roams), but it might be because fleet boosters are all defensive.
It makes sense to only have defensive boosts available to a very large fleet, as they generally have enough dps to take out just about anything in mere seconds. So tank boosts plus tank modules keep your logi from being out of a job. But in small gangs, tank is cheap and dps is more important.
What if there were offensive boosters that could only be used at squad level? In a large fleet, there would have to be many assigned squad boosters to make that happen, and due to having so many ships assigned this way, the overall fleet dps might not even go up that much. But in a small squad with some battlecruisers, it wouldn't be hard for some random battlecruiser pilot to just pop a booster on and make everyone hit just a bit harder. -á"The Mittani: Hated By Badposters i'm strangely comfortable with it" -Mittens |
