Edited by: Commander Jones on 24/10/2004 15:49:09 He he...completely off topic (or is it?) but I just came back from the book shop and got me a shiny copy of mr Banks's new novel "The Algebraist".
here's the summary: "It is 4034 AD. Humanity has made it to the stars. Fassin Taak, a Slow Seer at the Court of the Nasqueron Dwellers, will be fortunate if he makes it to the end of the year. The Nasqueron Dwellers inhabit a gas giant on the outskirts of the galaxy, in a system awaiting its wormhole connection to the rest of civilisation. In the meantime, they are dismissed as decadents living in a state of highly developed barbarism, hoarding data without order, hunting their own young and fighting pointless formal wars. Seconded to a military-religious order he' s barely heard of - part of the baroque hierarchy of the Mercatoria, the latest galactic hegemony - Fassin Taak has to travel again amongst the Dwellers. He is in search of a secret hidden for half a billion years. But with each day that passes a war draws closer - a war that threatens to overwhelm everything and everyone he' s ever known."
Just a heads up for you Banks fans out there

There's a forum called "Out of Pod Experience" for posts like this, and I'm sure it will end up there by way of a friendly mod soon.
I only wanted to ask what titles you would recommend to someone who's never gotten around to reading anything by Banks yet.

Edited by: Commander Jones on 24/10/2004 16:07:53 My all time favorites are "Excession" and "the Player of Games" any of the two would be fine for starters. If you want to read 'em from the start you need to get "Consider Phlebas".
Also, I don't consider this to belong to the "out of pod" forum due to the fact that the book shop I bought this in was the "Waterstone's" located on the 27th lvl of the Concord station in Yulai.

Player of Games should be an excellent start for aspiring Iain M. Banks readers
