I was wondering if anyone could offer some insight into the across the board decline in mineral prices seen recently? I understand the basic economic conditions and pressures that lead to widespread price decline, but was curious if anyone knew specifically why we are seeing this current trend.
On another note, does anyone know of a resource for viewing market prices / graphs going back past 1 year?

This isn't recent, been like this for maybe 2 months now? If you do your homework, you'll find your answer and tons of other threads covering your question.
And if you go to price history, you can view up to 1 year.

I thought it would be interesting to hear constructive opinions on this in a consolidated place.
Also I was asking about a resource to view prices *older* than 1 year...

Hey, be nice, Brock is working on his facetious, rude and apathetic answers that are prerequisites of being an MD Pro.

* Nobody is fighting major wars right now. * Everyone is waiting to see what Dominion will bring to sovereignty changes. * There are a large number of Non-Aggression Pacts (NAP) active.
... which probably also explains why the Goons are so bored that they are blowing up research POSes in hisec.

Yeah the biggest reason why the prices for minerals is going down so much is because everyone is waiting to see what the new expansion will bring. For now, just stockpile your ore and wait for demand to pick back up. I miss when I could sell trit for 4.3 isk per unit. Oh those were the days....

And of course this is having a ripple through effect on prices of many things such as PvP mods and ships.
Like many people I'm sitting on massive stockpiles of stuff waiting for demand to increase. |

Insurance market is having a boom, so to speak.
Some feel it is the lack of wars, some feel it is natural behavior of mature BPOs and players fighting over increasingly smaller margins. Some think it is the rush of miners after unholy rage attempting to fill a perceived gap, some feel that unholy rage also removed a lot of false buy orders that were placed by the farmers to encourage the .01 ISK wars upwards.
Could be all of these things.

Expect them to drop further in the next few months as it becomes clearer that T2 moons are going to become worthless and the last impetus for 0.0 fleet battles goes away.

Edited by: Eli Porter on 01/10/2009 12:25:34 The increase in popularity of the richest Mineral source in the game, Wormholes, might have something to do with it as well as the other reasons mentioned in this thread.

I blame the 50k Ore hold on the Orca. It definitely got me mining alot more recently.

I don't think its that prices are low, just that there were previously unusually high.....

Main reason is nobody is fighting major wars right now (smart alliances are hunkered down until winter patch; until till then prices will be free fall)
And not just minerals, T2 mods, ships.
But you might see small jump just before pre-patch but that normal.

makes you wonder how much damage one of the big alliances could do if they attacked now, with everyone else getting a tad lax, i think it would be devastating personally.

I would point to the lack of significant conflict. This drives down demand and increases supply. Ship prices have certainly followed, which has kept demand relatively stable. Interestingly, margins have increased recently even as mineral and ship prices have continued to fall.

Nah, that couldn't be it. That would totally upset the balance of empire minerals and turn relative mineral values on their heads. OH WAI...

Wouldn't that drive prices up?

Economics 101:
The less money put into a system, the less inflation is. In fact as the money supply decreases, deflation happens and prices get cheaper.
And by taking the ISK farmers out of the system (which many were just mission runners and not just miners) resulted in less ISK which makes it ISK worth more so the price plexs go down ergo the price of everything goes down.
