Two things related to my problems: 1) The mug shot that I initially made with the account looked fine during development but now has a color-explosion all over the face - looks horrible.
2) Everytime in the game when I try to load up a mugshot anywhere, the system locks and I have to reset the computer. (Unacceptable)
Catalyst 3.5 drivers Windows 2000 / latest patches Creative Audigy 2 sound
is there a magic switch to fix this problem? The game is unplayable like this. Please help.

i once had a problem with a friends ati, he had upgraded from a 7500 pro to a 9500 pro. games were troublesome to say the least. the problem could be that the ati drivers dont automatically uninstall, but rather try to influence the new cards' oprations as though it were operating the previos one from beyond the grave. try an uninstall of all graphics drivers, re download them, install, then update direct-x. it is reccomended the you use whql certified drivers as these are 100% gauranteed to work with the product and system. sometimes even antialiasing and anistropy can cause glitches (if i have 2x aa on my screen goes insane for half a second upon mugshot creation), which could in return cause a crash. the best idea is to have a fiddle and see what happens. good luck ElRodeo

Hate to say it but I have exactly the same system setup as you with no problems of this type at all, Win 2k pro patched to latest Audigy2 Platinum Crucial ATI 9700Pro running the 3.5 Catalysts
suggests your problem maybe elsewhere?

I am really stumped on this one. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling all versions of the catalyst drivers (3.2, 3.4, and 3.5) and they all crash on either the mugshot-loading or hitting ESC.
I tried disabling AGP Fast-Write (as someone suggested elsewhere) - that didn't help. I tweaked some Direct3D settings in the ATI control panel - still crashing.
This is the only game in my arsenal that crashes on the ATI so I just don't get it. Since I have my other system with a GeForce 3 that runs EVE perfectly, I can wait around for the ATI to work but still, this is bothering me. I may get another GeForce just to get the other system working with EVE since this is the only game that I play now. (I put the GeForce 3 into the crashing system and EVE ran perfectly.)
Thanks for your replies and look forward to hearing from anyone else about their experience with this.

I have the same setup except I'm running XP instead of 2k Pro. I'm also having the same problem with mug shots. As suggested in another thread, just disable mug shots until this is fixed.

Hmmmmm....I have a Radeon 7500 LE on a P3 Celeron system...just installed the card two days ago as an upgrade from an onboard video system. I can't get more than the Amarr male mug to load without a CTD. Seems like I picked the wrong card. Oh Dagnabit! I thought these incompatability issues were supposed to vanish with DOS. I'm getting a Playstation! ....oh wait, I can't play this on a Playstation....my head!

To be able to help we really need to know more specifics about your hardware and operating system.
I have a Radeon 9700 Pro, AMD 1800+, 768mb DDR, SBLive sound card.
Using WinXP Pro fully updated, Catalyst 3.5 drivers.
The game hardly ever crashes on me and the performance is brilliant. I have 8xAA and 16xAF foced too.
So, more details on your hardware is pretty vital. When the game crashes a .dmp file is created with a timestamp. If you mail those to [email protected] our programmers can take a look at them. If the crash scenario happens under specific circumstances then try running the logserver along with it and attach it to a bug report.

I also had the exact same issue.
ATI 9700 Pro w/Catalyst 3.5 Drivers Windows XP Pro fully patched SB Audigy 2 fully patched P4 2.4Ghz Processor
I spent 4 hours trying downgrading and playing with the video card drivers as soon as I unwraped and installed the software.
I was finally able to stop the game crashing when it loaded the images by downgrading to the Catalyst 3.0 drivers. Now my system is rock solid.
Could it be an issue with Intel vs AMD since the Dev guy's system is running fine?

Kwai: Could you note what brand of ram you are using?
Everybody who is having problems, list your ram please? I'm running (2) sticks of crucial 2700 512megs each. |

I'm having the same problems. The game crashes about 5 seconds after loading (or attempting to load) the character screen. Most of the time the screen just freezes, but I'm able to move the cursor around. Sometimes, I get a black screen. I ALWAYS have to reboot due to lock. Here's what I have:
Abit IC7 motherboard (flashed with most recent BIOS) 1 GB Corsair Twinx pc3200 (512mb each stick) P4 2.8 Ghz processor Radeon 9700 AIW (Catalyst 3.5 drivers) Win XP Pro completely updated Aureal Vortex 8830 Sound Card (doesn't support hardware buffering - latest drivers which aren't really new - no longer any support?) Onboard sound is AC'97 (but it's always been disabled and I've never used it) Westell DSL modem using Ethernet connection (NOT USB - USB 2.0 has never been enabled on this computer nor slots for it connected to the motherboard)
I have many other games. None of them have given me any problems with this setup.

Kyn Aerie, in your case it might be the sound card. You have old drivers and perhaps DX9 uses direct sound features your sound card drivers cannot handle.
A while ago I remember a player could identify the audio system as the problem by disabling it and thereby getting no crashes. _________________________________________________________

Thanks for your input. There are a couple reasons why I hesitate to lay the blame on the sound card, though. I've been playing this game for about two weeks. It worked fine when I first bought the game. I've always used patch 1077 (I think I started when 1077 first came out). I've had a few crashes in game, but nothing seriously debilitating. Then about 4 days ago, I can't even get past the character screen. As a matter of fact, I never even got the audio hardware acceleration error window until around the same time my system started crashing at the character setup screen.
Maybe it is the soundcard. I'll probably go out and get a newer one regardless, but if it IS the soundcard, why was I able to play the game for over a week before this problem started to happen? Maybe as a result of a daily update during system downtime?
Thanks for any help you can offer. I'm at work right now, or I'd be testing your theory instead of chatting about it more.

I just tested a few things out. Tried out a stick of ocz 2100 ram. Same freezing issue. Tried out a nvidia graphics card (ti4200), same freezing issue. We updated everything we possibly could.
We're going to take a longshot here and say the mobo is messed. I might try getting a VIA kt400 chipset motherboard. Before I do that though, does anybody have an opinion as to what I should do? |

I'm at home for lunch. I decided to try deactivating the sound card. I deactivated it, rebooted, confirmed that the card was no longer active, and ran EVE patch 1077.
Same thing. Well, I received two notices that I had not sound card drivers installed, both before and after I logged in, but the game froze just a couple seconds after the character screen popped up. Again. Could it be the sound card if this is happening even when the sound card is disabled? I wouldn't think so, but.....
Any ideas?

Kwai - Thanks for the info - I will attempt to dump the logs when I get home from work. A Geforce card in the same system works great so I'm very sure it's just the card and/or how Eve interfaces with that card.
Kyn - Try a cheap Geforce 3 or better video card to see if it's just your ATI... That's what I did and my old GeForce3 cards works great with Eve. This will cancel out all other hardware issues.

Since you have tried an nVidia card, your problem sounds a lot more complex. I would take Kwai's advice and attempt to dump the logs and send in a bug report.

Even if the GeForce card does work, that's not a workable option.
If EVE doesn't work on my out-of-date sound card, that's an issue for me to solve. If EVE doesn't work on the newest video cards, that's an issue for CCP to solve.
I'm going to do my part and spring for a new sound card (just to make sure - and to clear up that audio hardware acceleration window the right way), but if that doesn't work....
I haven't heard anything from CCP since 6/25 in the support section. Not even that they're working on it, or they think it might be _______ or _______. Try _______. Nothing, yet. I'll send some .dmp files to them this evening.

Just thought I'd drop this in, there is another computer here with a nearly identical computer as mine. Except he has a p4 1800....
So this doesn't seem to be a CPU vs GPU...
Please send those dumps in and see if you can toss in a bug report with a log as well.

What I Have noticed however useful.. is that EVE relies heavily on the Processor as it runs at 100% all the time this can expose problems in many "Overclocked PC's" and or "overclocked" graphics cards.
As a general FYI.. run all components at standard rated speeds beforehand.
As to Radeon 9700 owners (including myself) make sure that the power supply is of good quality and rated to atleast 350w, as the Radeon 9700 relies heavily on a constant 12v dc line to power its GPU. Blake, William. 1757-1827.
British poet and artist whose paintings and poetic works, such as Songs of Innocence (1789) and The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (c. 1790), have a mystical, visionary quality. |

Perhaps its processor Related:
Im using a P4 3.06 Ghz, 2 Ghb Mushkin SDram, Radeon 9700 Pro Soundblaster Live Gamer Intel Based board.
This game crashes when i load mugshots, ever since i installed the new processor, It worked just fine when i was using a 1.8ghz p4 with 1gb Rambus ram, must be processor speed related In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made alot of people very angry and been widely reguarded as a bad move. |

Well, I hate to say it but my mugshot crashes didn't stop until I got a newer motherboard (and ram to go with it.) I was using a 1.5 year old abit board but when I tried it on the new system, it worked like a champ:
ATI 9700 Pro w/Cat 3.5 drivers Intel D845PEBT2 board generic DDR333 Ram - 1 GB Soundblaster Live
But you are probably using new boards, so perhaps this isn't helping you. Good luck, let us know what else you try.

For what it's worth, I had the same problem loading some portraits as well as those of ships and various equipment..I downgraded to catalyst 3.0 and haven't crashed since. My performance, especially while mining, is horrible, though.

I have had similar problems. A solution is to rename a file located in EVE\cache\Pictures\Portraits The file is called chappcache_a.blue Rename the .blue to .old or similar. this will get you past the getting characters part and let you play the game fine. I dont know why it happens but my symptoms are exactly the same as yours and this resolves it.
Hope this helps
