So I see a lot of fits with faction ammo over T2, but when I plug in the items on EVE Fit, I show that T2 ammo can dish out more damage.
Why use faction? More specifically, it's missiles I'm looking at.

Faction Ammo has significantly lower skill reqs me thinks than the T2 counterpart. -----------------------------------

Depends on the situation. T2 ammo often times has penalties that faction ammo doesn't suffer from (range penalty, tracking penalty, capacitor usage penalty, etc). There are other small differences that may push someone to use faction over T2. For instance, T2 projectile ammo only does kinetic/explosive damage. If you want to shoot EM at someone you're going to have to use T1 or faction ammo instead.

Well for missiles, look at the damage, explosion velocity, and radius.
T2 Scourge Fury Damage: 192 Explosion Velocity: 97 m/s Explosion Radius: 215 m
T2 Scourge Precision Damage: 130 Explosion Velocity: 87 m/s Explosion Radius: 112 m
Caldari Navy Scourge Heavy Missile Damage: 172 Explosion Velocity: 81 m/s Explosion Radius: 125 m
T2 Fury does the most damage, but ONLY to MUCH larger targets! T2 Precision does less damage than faction, and is otherwise similar BUT has a horrible ship velocity drawback!
T2 ammo is far less expensive than faction, so people do use it in missions. Most never use faction ammo in missions, only PvP.

Interesting information. That about clears some of that up.
Thanks!

Edited by: Celeritas 5k on 02/10/2009 21:04:03 It's mostly the penalties that come with T2; most of the time they aren't worth the few extra DPS you get over faction ammo. I do see a lot of people using T2 laz0r crystals though; but don't use them myself so I can't tell you much about them.
edit: Sorry, didn't see that the question had already been answered. Wrote a response, tabbed away to wait out the timer, then came back and posted without looking. - Always be Happy, Never be satisfied. |

Choices can also be very dependent on whatÆs for sale in the region (often limited) and what you are flying/flying against.
Everyone likes navy missiles. Excellent damage with no drawbacks. However they are pricy and so favoured in PVP when you are not spamming them at a silly rate. In PVP itÆs nice to have a choice of ammo in your hold. Then if you know what you are going to engage you can switch accordingly. For example a HAM Drake pilot would want to use T2 javelins against small targets and T2 Rage against some juicy BS sized ships.
In PVE T2 comes into its own for range bonuses. A good example being Torp RavenÆs which use T2 Javlins Torps for the extra range.

For turret based weapons, the long range ammo is very popular for PvP, and some PvE activities (more so for Amarr). It has a tracking penalty, but since the point is hitting from range its impact is minimized. The high damage turret ammo was nerfed severely several years ago, and I believe has a velocity penalty now. Typically those wanting a damage boost for turrets will use faction ammo over the high damage T2 type.
Note that T2 ammo is different for different weapon systems - Pulse lasers use Scorch while Beam lasers use Aurora. Autocannons use Barrage and Artillery uses Tremor. Blasters use Null while Railguns use Spike. These are all +range ammunitions.

= T2 = (+) more dps (-) diverse penalties (+) better price
= faction = (-) less dps (+) no penalties (-) uberprice
many people stand: "but faction laz0rx und missilorz is free cuz I got em from LP for a sexy price!!!1!". Dont listen to them this is just yet another case of opportunity cost ignorance.
