Looking though the forums this morning I noticed a minmitar player complaining about how the only ewar his race gets is a little laser light that makes it easier to target and hit. This got me thinking. While he was complaining he was right. Target painters suck very much atm. So I decided to come up with these ideas. Some are changes to current modules others are new.
Change to the current target painter Currently the target painter really is not worth much to the ship using it as it has to acquire a lock on the designated ship then apply the module. Which for many players is downright boring. So my change. The player activates the module and it immediately points 2-4 (tech dependant) beams at any hostile ship in the area each applies the effect of the current target painter with the lock time and such but does not require that the player have to lock the ships being exposed, a player going up against more ships can fit more target paints as each ship can only be hit by 1 of the beams the ships projects. (Multiple ships can stack though)
This next module is actually a modification of an idea posted by ôZemlinö hope you donÆt mind dude/dudet
A new form of targeting laser called a xenon painter. It has a green beam similar to the effect the current target painter has but differs in one way. it causes the targeted ship to literally light up like a light causing any weapon systems aim at said target to increase to a point that if the target ship is within the normal fall off range it is treated as being in optimal range. A ship outside the maximum range is still not going to take a hit.
Lastly one more module A third version of the target painter this time with a purple beam called the pollaraon projector. In essence any ship hit by such a beam can be ôseenö at far greater distances by the ships systems than normal. And while it doesnÆt give a lock speed or accuracy bonus, ships can lock the targeted ship even if itÆs farther away than there max lock range. In the event the beam is cut. The effect drops slowly, not in one sec
So in a nut shell , current target painter will effect 2-4 hostile ships in range without requiring a target lock on said ship , 2 specialty painters will allow a ship to hit its target in its falloff range as if it where optimal, and lastly will allow a ship to target another that is outside its current max range with the help of a friend who is closer.

actually, the target painter is pretty good right now. just people dont quite understand it or see how it benefits them without a big table of info.
the simplest explaination ive seen is its a tracking computer for your entire gang but with a longer cycle time. -

This. TP increased your tracking directly, and increases the sig radius (and therefore mitigates gun/target missmatches) directly. People just don't understand how the mechanics work, and think that ewar should be some kind of awesome module that virtually makes the enemy ship explode instantly--like ECM (or TD, or damps, depending on target).
There are a couple things that could be done to TP to increase its utility--especially for Minmatar:
1) Reduce the target's effective range for falloff calculations by the TP amount. In other words, when damage calculations are applied, a target would be TP% closer to 0 falloff distance.
2) Increase the probability somewhat more for higher-quality hits once the target is in optimal. We currently can't quite tell if the TP does this already, so I am assuming the increased sig radius does help with quality-of-hit. Could be completely wrong, though!
3) Add a ship bonus and/or (lowslot) module that increases the optimal range for target painters. There is a rig that does this, at the expense of shields. A ship that can TP at long range (150km-ish) would be highly effective for Minmatar sniper fleets. Since TP does not disable the enemy ship, unlike ECM, this should be acceptable. In fact, of all the ewars, TP makes the most sense to have the longest range.
There's a reason that the acronyms for named TPs amount to variations of "PWN"--and it's not a sick joke on CCP's part.

3) Honestly the TP needs only one thing, and another would be nice, but is not required. --Krum |

you have just hit the nail on the head my friend.
target painters are really useful, we all know that. its just that everyone else gets "some kind of awesome module that virtually makes the enemy ship explode instantly", while all us minmatar pilots get " really useful".
this isnt about TP's being useless, its about everyone elses ewar being made of **** and ownage, and ours merely being "useful".

actually SD are pretty poo; considering PVP's pechant to fit sensor boosters, and turret distruptors are of no use against drones or missiles. -

yes target painter is very good on non-target painter specialized ships.
however this post started out pointing out that this was about minmatar ewar. in the 4 years I've been playing I've seen 2 players specialise in target painters in a battle (1 was me) and both didn't work very well. ------------------------------
