Edited by: Daedalus II on 08/10/2009 12:37:00 There has been some talking about fleet formations and how you don't really have any use of formations in eve as you can shoot through obstacles anyway.
I suggest adding a shield to carriers or only super carriers. This shield works like a POS shield, approximately the strength of a large POS shield, but without reinforced mode. It draws stront while active.
There is one important difference compared to a POS shield though; you can't lock hostiles out of it.
This means that capital ships can set up small fortifications where sniping ships can hide against enemy sniping ships. However due to the shields letting anyone in, the enemy can always warp in a close combat fleet close to the shields and attack from within. A well placed cov ops as warp in point would be a powerful weapon.
I think this would liven up large scale battles and give some incentive to divide the fleet into different defensive, aggressive, close range and sniping formations. Picking off people from A-Z would not be possible any more

Interesting... but I suspect they will just add a fleet bonus to being in a formation.
e.g. +5% Shield etc

Yeah but that's not "true" formations. As in you don't have any bonus due to your position in relation to the enemy (compare with a hill, forest or fortification in RL)
While the new formation mechanic will put people into formations, I think it doesn't seem to be much more than a glorified fleet bonus. My suggestion make people do their own "custom" formations out of what will work best in the given battle.
I think you could say that the new formations mechanic is a tactical formation, while my suggestion is a strategical emplacement.

Yeah I do like your idea but I wonder how it could apply to none capital fleets.
If I remember (and I was quite drunk at the time ) the image they showed at Fanfest was of a group of ship/aircraft in a V formation... so not sure where they are going with that apart from it looking awesome!
I can see how some formations would be helpful. For example a string of bombers in a line, nicely spaced out for bomb deployment.

I like the idea of that shield :) You see it in movies a lot.
The only thing is the cap ship should still be vulnerable to fire. Maybe instead of a shield it emits a universal jammer that doesn't allow target locks on a certain # of ships within 5k of itself (minus the cap itself) Although, I could see this easily becoming blob 2.0
I'm interested to see how people will respond to formations while still spider-tanking. The roughly 5k distance would mean remote reps would have to be evenly spread out and not as many ships may be able to save you.
