I'll be flying Stealth Bombers soon (amarr) and want to understand the technique involved in launching bombs.
1) what range does the target need to be within? 2) Can you just point your ship and fire bomb without having to lock? 3) If you get target locked can you still fire bombs?
Thansk for the info and non-flames.

Bombs have an area of effect of 15km. Your skills will effect how far you can lob the bomb before it explodes. Most bomber pilots I've come up against fire at approx 30km to help avoid being tackled and let the AOE do it's job.

Yes. You align to a planet/safespot/whatever, uncloak and fire, then warp out.

Yes, just not cloak up again.

1/2 wrong.
Your right about the 15km blast radius. Your skills do nothing to effect how far a bomb travels before it goes boom.
All bombs travel 30km before they go off, your skills only effect the cool down period before you can fire another one and to be able to use void/ecm bombs (Bomb deployment 4)

I think you should fire your bomb before you align to warp out.

Fair one, I stand corrected.

Nope, I'm pretty goddamed sure that I would align to a safespot or celestial object before I uncloaked.
The 'careful planning' I put in while cloaked before I struck would mean that I was aligned towards my target at the same time so that as soon as my bomb was away, I could get out of dodge. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edited by: Dulas on 08/10/2009 20:09:33 Two ways to use bombs in pvp, solo and fleet.
Solo: Approach ratting Battleship in your cloaky WTFPWNBBQ bomber, cloaked of course. At 30km uncloak, lock Battleship, launch bomb, spiral in to orbit at 18/20km, once bomb has gone off engage MWD which should get you into orbit fast, engage point, launch torps, collect KM and loot.
Notes: Do not MWD after launching the bomb, you will blow yourself up. Don't laugh, you would at how many people have done this. Certain drones will eat you, GTFO if you see them. Your bombs will blow up your missiles if you fire them too soon.
Fleet: Align 10 degrees off warp point from target, hard to click stuff behind stuff in the heat of battle. Decloak, fire bomb, warp, done. The hardest part is getting into posistion for the bombing run.

So what do you do when your target doesn't perfectly line up with a celestial object?

This is the most annoying part tbh. If you are working with other cloaked ships, you have to communicate so you don't uncloak each other. It takes time to manuver into the right spot, and it also depends on the target(s). If there are no fast locking frig killing ships around, or anything that can one volley you, then it is not a 100% must do thing. If there are, you better take the time to get aligned.

Do the next best thing, make your bomber as agile as possible. Nano in the lows and a poly in the rigs do the trick.
In a gang, my Hound can turn and warp in 3.3 sec and my Manticore can do it in 3.7 sec.

Bombing ops are all about stalking your targets, patiently moving to a position where you can strike without getting killed. It's certainly not for the faint of heart.
Of course if you're not worried about getting caught or hit, like if you're going after a solo turret-based BS, then you're in a situation where you can bomb, then damp, paint, and torp him to death, so you don't have to worry about alignment.

It helps to have several bombers fit points. Against larger targets (BC, BS) this could buy you valuable time if you do manage to decloak yourself on a squadmate.

I wonder if cloaked ships will be able to fly in formations?
But to answer one of the questions: when your target isn't perfectly lined up with a celestial object, it's because you didn't spend the time manoeuvring while cloaked to get into the right place for the target to be lined up with a celestial object.

I think that's a subject up for speculation, something we can't quite comment on yet. Time will tell.
