Is there any noticable benefit of running EVE on a Solid State HD?
I am looking at getting a cheap 16 or 32 gig Solid State drive to dedicate to EVE... anyone doing this and is it worth the trouble?

I am running both Vista and XP on SSDs from OCZ, and tbh its not worth it. It requires some tweaking, and the performance increase is not significant if you have a decent system setup to begin with.
The biggest problem was stuttering, but viper fixed that for now. Hopefully this will be better with Win7.
My advice; keep your regular harddrive :)

Edited by: Don Pellegrino on 08/10/2009 16:40:50 Stuttering is caused by bad memory controllers.
At the moment, there is only 3 good controllers: Samsung's PJ22, Indilinx's Barefoot and Intel's.
The PJ22 based drives are rather expensive and slow compared to the cheaper Indilinx based drives.
Intel's drives are the best in everyday use because its random access read/write speed is extremely good. Advertised read/write speeds are optimal/sequential speeds and totally irrevelant in a real world everyday use.
You stated that you wanted a "cheap" (it's still a SSD...) and low capacity drive. Get either a OCZ Vertex, OCZ Agility or a Intel X-25M.
Eve is not a harddrive dependent game and there's almost no loading time. Your overall computer experience will be awesome and loading times are reduced by 50-70%. Everything is faster to open, react, etc..
The game I found to benefit the most from a SSD so far is Team Fortress 2. I almost didn't notice any difference in Eve, but the overall better computer experience is worth it. Just install the OS and all your games on the SSD.
EDIT: DO NOT BUY any other SSD than a Indilinx or Intel based one. The other drives are WORSE than a regular hard drive.

Keep in mind what I'm about to say is VERY VERY simplified for the sake of making my point. (yes, I'm assuming 0 network delay which we know isn't the case...)
Hard disks are one of the lowest rungs in the eve performance ladder. You're better off getting more/better: RAM, CPU, Video, MB than a faster HDD.
There are a ton of articles why, and yes I would get a better motherboard before I would get a better hdd unless it's a quantum fireball from 1996. Now, now, now. Sounds like someone's got a case of the poor me's. If you were gonna die, you would have done it by now! Maybe you just need to realize you're gonna to have to live with intense pain |

just to sum up what was said above... the single biggest piece of hardware used for eve is the gpu (video card), followed by ramm, and then cpu...
When i started playing even a few year back I had a shuttle with a quad core, 4 gb of ramm, and a 8800gtx (756mb) video... it was great no issues... until the shuttle died.
i bought a generic dell for replacement, with a celeron cpu, because i needed a quick replacement and funds where low.
after a year of and few changes, i'm still using the celeron cpu, a 9800gtx card, and 3gb of ramm... i can triple box eve on full graphics with frame rates averaging around 60~75.
So tbh, IÆm not sure a ssd will make much of an improvement for general play, although, loading big grids and structures where a lot of textures are needed might be a bit quicker, but I really guess itÆs how your gpu is setup.

Isn't this the Tech II shuttle someone wanted?

don't hesitate to buy one, it is an awesome upgrade to your general computer experience.
but don't expect it to affect eve, because it doesn't.
