Just chucking up a thread asking for any and all information anyone has about the formations hinted at in the Fanfest keynote video.
Also had some questions/ideas
Will these formations be used by NPC's in missions? (would be cool as anything, and add more depth to "doin the grind")
Will formations be possible only in a fleet, or can non-fleeted pilots form up?
Will formations be limited to ships of a similar class, and will there be "meta" formations... say, a wing of frigates in escort positions around a cruiser?

Couple more quick ideas.
Formations can be assigned to drones and fighters
Certain formations amplifying command ship gang module bonuses.

Hi,
I really, really, really hope that formation wont work as follows: fleet/wing/squad commander right clicks in space, pick 'claw formation' and all ships in this formation automatically receives +10% to shield hp. Because it's a way most games work and it's lame.
I believe in formation the way, they were introduced in starcraft. I.e. against lurkers, marines must be scattered around, making lurkers ineffective against them, or tanks might have marines at front of them and behind them in order to provide wall that will absorb some hp as well as granting a bit firepower when tanks are attacked.
How this may be obtained in eve? I think it's very simple. Increase the size of every object ingame by ten times. Battleships will have radius not 200m but 2km and this will increase blob radius of 100 battleships from 8km total into 80km, and thus optimal range will be an issue (of some kind) for fleet.
Maybe then, fleet commanders instead of requiring everyone to drive long range bs, will ask for one squad of short range bs squad, 2 long range squads and create some kind of formation from them. Filling empty space between squads with cruisers to block hostile squads from getting to near to battleships squads. And frigs that are so small and fast that they can flank enemy fleet from the sides and create some good warpins disabling hostile fleet formation in effect.
P.S.
Increasing size of objects in game, of course doesn't mean that we need to increase models ten times, it'll be more like overview change where you will find that you cant exactly hug to 40 battleships around you and it's quite easy to bump from other objects in space.

I don't think making ships "bigger" would do anything, all it would do is make the already off bounding boxes on ships even more strange.

Cruisers are about 200 m. Battleships are (except Caldari) around 1 km, with longest almost 2 km.
That said, there would be several good uses for formations. Make sure everyone's within RR range of that Dominix? Keep everyone aligned as per FC's will? (Watch out for FC passing out, though...) Also, lines of battle, making sure everyone's close to the intended optimal. Putting smartbombers on front of the fleet to bomb incoming drones and missiles, but far enough to avoid friendly fire. And so on.
Formation editor would also be quite cool, depending on how formations are built. Perhaps the basic formation will be squad size, and then wing formations can be built of these squad formations, etc.

Originally by: Mithfindel Formation editor would also be quite cool
There is already such a feature in eve. You can double click anywhere in space to make your ship fly in that direction, this can be used to position your ship in a formation next to other ships. It can even be used while in flight to approach other ships and fall into formation.
The double click feature has for many years been somewhat obscure and mysterious, but I hope that players will soon figure out the full potential and have fun with their formations.
Enjoy!
P.S If you would like to see a demonstration of this fantastic tool, we are putting on an air show in Juunigaishi, most likely on Saturday October 17th around 18:30. See you there!

Okay, formations are possible even now. Holding the said formations when there's lag and quite a lot of ships with different max speeds, that's the issue the "new formations" would be for.

So you couldn't shield other ships by tacking a % of the total damage their being hit with?
Cause seriously being able to shield another player would actually make it worth while to tank out your ship and learn Leadership- Formation Defensive.

I think is a good idea, they we will work like bosters, with benefict and drawback. with time to put online, and counter formation to defend againt them. Give them more tactical tools to a fleet comander.

I think that formations in EVE will be more like the formations in Homeworld/HW2. Frigate screen - small ships in front, heavy ships behind. Battleship/Capital phalanx - big ships in front, small ships behind.

Wall of Battle: Used for battleships and Capital ships. A Tight 3 dimensional formation that allows every ship clean firing arcs and support from 8 ships. Since Every ship has a clean front and rear they can move. It also limits bumping as the ships advance on the enemy. It limits side to side movement though as 1 can cause all the other ships to be bumped out of the wall.
