Don't get me wrong, I tried very hard. Very hard. Sadly, after a five hour slog and the loss of two ships, I gave up on trying to pop Kritsan Parthus (in fact, I lost my cool completely and quit the mission. Sister Alitura was displeased, and docked me a chunk of standing, but has offered me the mission again). I followed Keith Neilson's excellent guide to the letter: I 'lowered my optimum range to just shy of 5km and got in under the range of Kritsan's lasers'. However, by the time I reached a 5km range from Kritsan, I was out of shield and armour and had to warp out quick! What do I do now? I have a ship, courtesy of the insurers, but am skint and somewhat demoralised. I can't blow the Epic Arc now, but have real fear of this mission!

Do as a lot of people do, ask for help in local and help each other to complete the mission.
I believe this was CCP's intention when setting this mission up, It is too hard for the majority of week old players if done solo.
Part of gaining experience in fleet mechanics and cooperation.

A cunning plan ... A wingman or two would certainly help. It's certainly the first mission when the opponent regenerates armour and shield.

Hmm ... if Kritsan is the dodgy Prophecy [shaky memory] .. one way round is to try getting a light drone to take the aggro. Or maybe I just got lucky with that :) Done by me with a fresh-rolled char in a Tristan. . "Out of the good of evil born, Came Uriel's voice of cherub scorn" |

When you're approaching, are you going in a straight line right at him (i.e. did you hit approach)?
If so, try a spiraling/zigzag pattern. This will maximize your traversal and make it harder for the rat to shoot you.

Juicy Cakes (nice name!), could you go into this zigzag / spiralling in more detail please? I've heard about 'transversal velocity', but not tried to use it. I just hit 'approach'. Actually, during combat, I'm pretty well just looking at the overview and my weapon status (not the actual screen). I've heard that I can double click on points in space, and that I could approach my target this way. It's just making that happen on screen. How close to the target should I click (1cm, more?). If I click too far away, the target will just slide off the screen ... Could you say may about this?

Transversal: your transversal is your velocity across your opponent's field of view. Put another way, it's the component of your total velocity that's not aimed toward or away from him. When you're orbiting at a constant distance, 100% of your velocity is going into transversal, when you're approaching or running away, 0%. The idea is that your opponent has trouble swinging his turrets fast enough to hit you if you keep your transversal up.
So when approaching a powerful opponent you go in at an angle. Some say zigzag, switching from one side of your opponent to the other. I say spiral, because every time you zig or zag, you slow down a lot. (Right angle turns, inertia, etc.) Practice with a corp mate or a friend, until you get a feel for what it takes to spiral in with reasonable success.

Beautifully explained. Thank you. Thank you to all for you advice, and thank you to my mystery benefactor. I just logged into Eve and have emailed you in game. Right, time to plan a strategy, and practice that transversal velocity! Aganippe.
