Edited by: Lucia Wilber on 15/10/2009 08:17:20 A friend and I were having a little debate, and since this discussion will likely take a turn for the worst, I'm putting it here.
The question is simple: What is the EVE community's general definition of Carebear? For example, lately I have been probing out hi-sec mission runners, tricking them into aggressing me, and then knocking their ships into structure so I can claim a ransom from them. He claims that this is carebear activity, while I do not.
My definition of carebear is a person that avoids PvP and avoids conflict with other players.
Edit: He also claims that low-sec gate campers, low-sec pirates, and those that use bubbles are also carebears since they only do "low risk" operations. His definition of carebear is anyone that avoids significant risk.
Anyone else?

A Carebear is!
Anybody who ransoms another player or randomly subjects innocents to acts of violence. As well as anybody who posts on C&P and they evolve into mega-bears if somehow they manage to stop poasting and use the optional add-on of internet spaceships. *** Currently Playing: Trolls from Outer Space Current Equipment: VISAcard chain mail, +2 Amulet of Epic Whine, Self Banstick +2 WTB: +666 E-peen killboard stats |

The generally accepted use (imo) is that carebear is one who when something happens they don't like or find to difficult tries to get it changed, as opposed to one who adapts to change and revels in challenge.
Back in the old days it just used to mean someone who liked mining and running missions and many pvpers were happy to call themselves, carebears with teeth.
Sadly nowadays thats a bit of an oxymoron as all modern 'carebears' have is a bark not a bite, once they bite they stop being carebears you see. ...

After extensive research on the subject, I have found the definitive definition of what a carebear is:
A carebear is a giant flying pinate.
Excuse the poor spelling of pinate, but I cant seem to do the little squiggly thing above the a. Trust me, I almost know what I'm doing. |

Carebear- carebear is a word made up by stronger playes to use on weaker player. In a hope to draw them into a fight they cant win. in the same way you will hear kids call each other chicken.

"A derogatory label and self assurance, used by little boys, whose only baddassery, comes from making their cartoon characters jump around and hit other players real good. Their fragile egos exist only in the form of number of PVP kills earned in a video game and are thus, sadder than you.
Used as a form of counter whining, and childish ad homonym to express frustration at the fact that other players may not enjoy having a 14 year old with self esteem issues and an internet based upbringing, or some 40 year old virgin who dry humps his keyboard for 22 hours a day- killing them while they're trying to play a game.
Those who use this phrase are usually used to chat speak and are generally unable to form complete sentences and original thoughts due to the brain filled with hopes of honor points and other such virtual pride.
Talk about how much a ***** people who aren't into PVP are but offline are the biggest chicken****s around. They honestly think anyone with pubic hair actually considers them to be intimidating.
Used by people who have no life outside a video game. "

Yes we are! But also...
Someone who will try to avoid any action or interaction which could result in some kind of loss.
Acting only where risk is minimal is called carebearism. Killing those poor miners in hulks which were sure that warp core stab would save them.
Now, engaging freighter with escort isn't carebearism, but engaging freighter alone is carebearism.
So we are all carebears, but some are bigger carebears then others.

I don't recall where this came from, but I was told a long time ago, carebears were those players who didn't like hi-sec pirates, would do all they could to stop hi-sec pirates/can baiters, and in some cases, would even go after said griefers.
But like I said, that was a long time ago.

Imagine you are on a busy street.
Imagine you have with you a PVP'er, and a Carebear.
All three of you see a baby being pushed by in a stroller.
You say to the PVP'er and the Carebear: "Someday, that baby is going to grow up, and compete in this world for the same resources, jobs, and opportunities as you do now".
The PVP'er will likely see this as a challenge, but if true to the principles, could concede that if someone who is 20 years or more his junior can outdo him somehow, taking his job or wealth, other whatever, then it's his own fault or incompetence that brought about his failure. The PVPer know he must be ready to compete with other to achieve his own goals and owns up to his own failures.
The Carebear however, will say "by then, I will have seniority/tenure, and I will he the kids boss. If he ****es me off, I will make sure he goes nowhere. That kid will have to put in the time to be successful, go along to get along, and tow the line. Maybe he can replace me when I retire."
It's not that Carebears avoid PVP, avoiding PVP IS a form of PVP if you are still going into bad places. I am ready to argue that people who go into low and null sec space but use intel to avoid fights are not carebears.
The true carebears are those that don't want to accept competition and instead manipulate their "world" through rules, regulations, and having time to bend them, and destroy the competition that way.
Looking at this world of unionized workplaces full of useless people, mainly in the public sector, and our unfree markets controlled by thousands of laws that prevent competition, the world is run by carebears.
PVP-ers come to the game to get away from that, carebears come to this game to perpetuate it.
