So i've been playing EVE for about a month, consistantly. In the past, I dabbled in combat and mining, both were extremely boring. So, since I came back, I decided to focus on Marketing, specifically hauling, with a current EVEmon build to get to a Blockade Runner. But I am sitting on a little more than half a billion. I've read most, if not all the articles from the stickies, and still have a few question.
This is in regards for investing and using my ISK, rather than sitting on it. I have a question about buy orders and sell orders. Obviously, for sell orders, I need to be selling something, but buy orders...I dont really understand why, or how people make money off buy orders. What exactly is the point of setting up buy orders for certain things? Do people set up buy orders to buy a lot of something, like Trit in hopes it goes back up in price? As being new to marketing, I dont understand why I would "invest" and buy 20mil worth of something...Wouldnt I have to basically have the highest prices buy orders so they will sell to me. Whats the point in that? Once someone filled my buy order, what do i do with the stuff?
I had another question but totally forgot...Anyways, any advice would help greatly, as I'd really like to do something with this ISK i've been sitting on.

Ok an item has highest buy order of 3m and lowest sell order of 4m
You place a buy order of 3.1m and make sell order of 3.9m for the stuff that comes in from the buy order. Result = profit
Ofc the people with the buy order of 3m and sell order of 4m aren't going be very happy with you. Which is where the fun starts

Ummm. Assuming this is a serious question ... once you have bought stuff on buy orders you sell it on sell orders, pocketing the margin. But seriously .... is this for real?

You understand sell orders, but don't understand what you can do with something you bought through a buy order?
Either you are extremely incompetent, drunk or high, or trolling. In any of those cases, I don't want to post any more in this thread.

Orca Sell Orders in Jita were approx 396m. I placed a buy order for 383m, slightly higher than the highest buy order at the time. Someone filled my buy order, and I essentially saved 13m Isk.
The rub is that you place the buy order in hopes someone will want to move an item quick, and will accept your offer. If the market is tight, sell and buy orders are very close together.
A lot of folks do this with NPC mission drop items. They place almost ridiculously low buy orders in hopes a mission runner who couldn't be bothered will dump the items for the quick Isk. The buyer, after accumulating a quantity of the item, puts it for sale for the much higher price, and > profit! Savvy buyers will know their market(s) and might move some items to outlying markets and even make more. It is a long term strategy, you have to know your markets and commodity prices and sales volume and spend a not insignificant amount of time sitting in stations monitoring your investments.

You could bother asking questions in the thread titled "Market Discussions û Ask Questions Here", the second thread in this forum. Better yet, you could spend 10 minutes reading that thread and discovering that someone else had the same question you do and already had it answered.
I did a 2 hour workshop on trading, search google for "HEXXX.RAR" and give it a listen.

Either grow thicker skin or spare us your next thread of "What should I buy?" or "How do I make a profit with my new Freighter?"
We like for people to be self-reliant here in MD. There is a ton of information for a new trader/hauler such as yourself that can easily be found in the stickies. I'm sure that you are reasonable enough to understand that most don't feel the need to help someone who won't help themselves first.

The problem here isn't that you asked for help and the people here are all nasty (although many are, to be honest). It's more that the particular question you asked was one that suggests you have missed the whole point of trading (kind of like joining a running club and then saying that you don't quite understand this one foot in front of the other business). This led me, at least, to think that this thread was just a troll. However, assuming, based on your reaction, that the question was genuine, contact me in game and I'll walk you through the basics.

D'oh! Man, that was silly of me. I guess I had better continue now, as the rage has made it interesting.

There are no stupid questions, only the stupid people that ask them.
Assuming from the rage you are being honest:
Quote: I've read most, if not all the articles from the stickies, and still have a few question.
No, you haven't. You either are lying or are incomptent. In the sticky, under "Newbie Guides", the first link is "Trading 101". The first real paragraph in that thread says "While most have a grasp of making ISK's few really understand the concept at its core. The idea is to buy something at a low price and sell it at a higher price." Read on.
Quote: This is in regards for investing and using my ISK, rather than sitting on it. I have a question about buy orders and sell orders. Obviously, for sell orders, I need to be selling something, but buy orders...I dont really understand why, or how people make money off buy orders.
You didn't read or understand the simple sentence from that first sticky. You say you understand you need something to sell. "Buy low, sell high." The most basic of common sense would tell you that if you have a buy order that gets filled, as in you bought some stuff low, you can now put that up in a sell order, as in you can sell it for a higher price.
Quote: What exactly is the point of setting up buy orders for certain things? Do people set up buy orders to buy a lot of something, like Trit in hopes it goes back up in price? As being new to marketing, I dont understand why I would "invest" and buy 20mil worth of something...Wouldnt I have to basically have the highest prices buy orders so they will sell to me. Whats the point in that? Once someone filled my buy order, what do i do with the stuff?
1. You say you understand that if you have something you can put it in a sell order.
2. You also say you understand that if you bought something with a buy order you now have something.
3. Look at points 1 and 2 and put them together. When you understand those two points you will understand why I assumed you were incompetent or a troll.
