Caldari pilot 20mil sp been away for about 6 months.
I want to get into a 0.0 corp and do large scale warfare with capital ships. I'm torn between a Pheonix (big heavy hitting **** in space) and the Chimera (more things to do than just select primary and hit a button). It seems quicker to train towards dreadnought but i like the idea of flying a carrier. What are the pros and cons of each relating to battle size and deployment? i know its a longer train for the high level drone skills on a carrier.

carrier is useful outside of shooting stuff.
Dreads are great at shooting stuff. Thats it. Blane Xero > Lance is at -0.9 sec status with a 1 million bounty. LAnce is also amarrian. Thats 3 evil points |

Train carrier first. You're still super useful in fleet ops, but you can also use the ship to move stuff around relatively safely when you're not fighting. It makes it a lot easier to get that new fitted, rigged BS from your lowsec staging system to your home in 0.0 if you can bypass all those jumps in between.
Also, carriers are cheaper to buy and insure.

Agreed with kesper, carrier first unless your alliance desperately needs dreads.

Carriers are more useful to you personally, dreads are more useful to your corp/alliance. I personally trained for dread first, then for carrier, and then for JF.

I wouldn't waste money on a personal dreadnought. Train the skills, but don't bother flying your own, most larger alliances have dreadnought loan programs for ops. Let the alliance eat the cost of flying a ship that the insurance payout won't fully cover. Owning one on your own basically hampers you with an extremely expensive hangar queen that's virtually useless outside of its very limited op profile.
Carriers are far better as a personal capital ship with a vital role in fleet ops too. In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.

With Dominion coming and their wanting to get away from heavy reliance on POS warfare (for sovereignty) Dread's aren't going to be as much use. The carrier is useful in many ways and Triage module is awesome in a fight (in support of others) unless one of the new super carriers shows up, then you're toast either way.

Anyway motherships become cheaper supercarriers. So, training for carriers will also open the doors of the Anticapital-Warfare club, thanks to the fighter-bombers. -------------------------------- Fulbert. Miner - Industrialist |
