i have been told you can fly around and find random groups of NPCs and use them to make money. problem is i cant find them. ive checked the asteroids and other systems but no luck thus far. ca you help?

What security level systems are you in? You might have to wait around for them to spawn sometimes. I think you are better of doing missions if you are just looking for some isk right now. You should also get salvaging so you can make more money after the mission is complete. The only real advantage to going after random npc rats is the off-chance of high-value loot drops, but in high-sec space they are rare. The difficulty of finding consistent NPC pirates in high sec, makes mission running generally a faster way to make money. You can also earn faction items through missions and Faction Wars.

Fly to a hi sec system that has a security level of 0.8 or lower and check all the asteroid belts. Maybe you can ask friendly resident miners to spot them for you :)

To really make good ISK ratting you need to be doing it in 0.0 space. You can rat with the npc pirates in hi-sec but the reward is 7k up isk....when your skilled enough to do it in 0.0 you can get over 1 million ISK killing the Battle ship npc pirates.
I remember way back thinking as I flew around Hi-Sec trying to figure out how to make money ratting( I'd heard the same stories as you ) and it just seemed impossible on the frigates...to sparse and not enough reward. Early on do missions/trading/mining etc to make isk. Somewhere around 10 million plus skill points your ready to hit the big rats that pay enough to make it worth the effort to hunt them down. But with the reward comes the risk of being in 0.0.

Outside of running missions you can find NPCs in belts, or through exploration sites and anomalies (can you still find anomalies on the ship scanner since the patch?). In lowsec and 0.0 systems you will often find them hanging round the stargates.
If you donĘt want to risk pirates the best NPCs you can get will be in 0.5 systems. You will quickly out grow them though.
