I've thought of a great way to combat the isk sellers. This won't help local or general chat channels so much, but player created and moderated channels would benefit from this.
Allow a moderator to add banable words to a list. If someone speaks one or more of these words, two things happen: 1. They get booted for X amount of time, as set by the moderator. 2. The message doesn't appear.
The eve-radio channel (for example) is plagued by these guys and the DJ's can't ban them before the spam is put there and the damage is done. A moderator could easily put the URL these spammers are using in the ban list and prevent the links from ever appearing.
Thanks, and tune into www.eve-radio.com for all your entertainment needs. ;) |

what if I ask , "Can I buy a Caracal for under 4 mil isk in nullsec?
"buy" and "isk " would probably be on your ban list. So I would get kicked or muted.
I would definitely recommend a site/url blocker, though. With the new version of the IGB, its going to be VERY easy for people to click links and see what a link is links to -something funny perhaps; NO an isk seller site! CCP should be able to globally block sites within the IGB browser to help prevent the isk selling.

Obviously, that's up to the moderator. If they put "buy" and "isk" in their ban list, they're asking for trouble, since those are very common words to use in Eve normally. The more obvious banwords would be the URL's commonly posted by isk sellers.

yup, thats why i mentioned urls ^^. But it would sure be nice if ccp banned links to those urls for us.
Also, you can always redirect url's back to the original site. ex. "click here to make billions of isk" >> brings you to a site that says "our site has moved", then you are redirected to the ISK sellers REAL page.
This should probably be deleted.

Is it just me or do these spammers seem to post at the same instant when the DJs talk. I agree with this 100%. These spammers need to be stopped!
Thanks for your show Erkenfresh.

People would put "Hello every player" on their banlists to the dismay of poor old Every Player.

Thanks for your show Erkenfresh.
Yes, I think they do that because they know more people pay attention to the channel while the on air DJ is speaking. ;) Just last night I banned three or four of them in the span of three hours. That was a light night compared to last week. |

I agree with you DJ but.... I think it's just a short term solution, the problem is the spamm bots will just change thier methods. They will start sending mass private invites, or worse.

to that I say BRING IT!
and agreeing with Erkenfresh on this one. some additional moderation options would be nice for channel moderators.

Thanks for posting guys. ;) The thing about the mass private convos and evemails and such is that they can do this already. The idea I've posted here just closes one more possibility down. I think my ban count last night was 8 over three hours. They now seem to have two types of spam instead of just one, but they both use the same URL.
Another idea brought up during my show by a listener last night was to allow the moderator to disallow trial accounts from talking. I think this is a fine idea, though I'd hate to see it used in the eve-radio chat. I think it's perfectly acceptible for a new player to join in on our fun, but maybe the option would be appropriate for other channels.

They just need to add a 'spam' option.
You r-click the player and the option pops up along with 'file petition (type)' that automatically fills in the user name and quotes their last post to the petition.
If you select 'spam' the person is immediately blocked to you while you are in that system. If you leave/return or relog that 'spammed users' list is wiped.
If enough people 'spam' block an individual they're gagged for a period of time (15 mins or so). If this blocking resumes when they're ungagged they get longer gag durations and 'spam' petitions are automatically generated (name & blocked by... so GMs can see if people are purposely force-gagging people with the feature and can then issue warnings, ect, or properly band the spammer).

And you think this would work? What exactly are the words you'd put on the list? How would you stop unnecessary bans from occuring?
You put "www.evestuffs.com" on the ban list, they start spamming "www dot evestuffs.com" or some other variation. (This has already happened in local chats, as that particular phrase is apparently flagged).
When you broaden the ban-word list enough, eventually you'll start getting the poor suckers who are just saying something close to the intentionally banned words.
Joe: Man, I wish I had more Evestuffs.
Moderator Shazbot: Automatic message. Joe has been autobanned for isk spamming.
How would you overcome these problems?
Not to mention how much fun it would be to mess with people by getting them to say bannable words and trick them into getting banned.

I hope you have enjoyed your time being able to speak, because if this went into effect as you propose, Goonswarm and others would see to it that no one ever spoke again.
Also, unless you plan to hire several hundred additional GMs to sort through the spam-ban list, it would be a huge drain on CCP's finite resources.

Yes.
Originally by: Izo Alabaster What exactly are the words you'd put on the list?
Let's say the web site in question is www.buymyisk.com. Put "buymyisk" in the ban list.
Originally by: Izo Alabaster How would you stop unnecessary bans from occuring?
Perhaps the first offense would give the user a warning instead of banning them. The message would still get blocked.

Avoided like in my above example. I'd like to add that maybe spaces should be stripped from the message first, so that "wwww.buymy isk.com" would also get blocked.

Avoided with giving a warning. Besides, it would be a fun little side game to play on people, tricking them to getting banned for 30 minutes. ;)
It's an added feature with a lot of flexibility given to the channel moderators. Obviously if the moderators abuse it by making "a" bannable, people will get mad and... simply stop using the channel. I'm guessing this isn't in the best interest of the moderator. Stupid moderators will find their channels empty and correct the problem.

I gotta agree with Izo on that. I thought this thread was just gonna die but you guys have rekindled it for the time being. Yay!
