slightly noobish question about missile launchers;
I understand that 'Heavy Launchers' & 'Heavy Assault Launchers' are two different types of launcher due to the different missiles that go in each, the same situation works for Cruise and Siege launchers, Hence the question;
What is the real reason for having 'Standard Missile Launcher' & 'Assault Missile Launcher'?
From what i can tell they fire the same type of missile, so why not the distinction in ammo types like the others?

Standard: Designed for frigate it have lower fitting requirments.
Assault: Designed for cruisers it have high rate of fire.

The distinction in mundane terms is simple: Back in the day, you could fit any missile into any launcher - the missile sze back then determined how many missiles each launcher could handle AND the refire rate. Assaults could handle multiple heavies, or LOTS of lights, with a fast refire rate - faster than heavy launchers.
In-game reasons is to give missile cruisers some anti-frig capability - as medium guns have tracking issues when it comes to frigs/asqault frigs/interceptors, and heavy missiles these days have limited use against frigs. One assault launcher with the right missiles can handle frig/drone work just fine - and, you may notice, most of the cruiser-size missileboats have dronebay issues :)

Good question OP, wondered the same thing myself when I first moved up to a Caracal, seemed to me that the only difference between them was the fitting requirments and I thought why not just fit Standards to my Cruiser and have bags of PG and CPU spare for other things?
I think Arkeladin, has explained how this situation came about, more of a legacy thing than intended. But there is one big advantage in fitting Assault Missile Launchers to a Caracal and that is the ship bonus - doesn't apply to standard launchers, only Assault, Hvy Assault and Heavy.
It is a bit frustrating, but you will find that the fitting requirements for Assault Launcher are much lower than Hvy Assault and Heavy launchers and Cruisers don't have fitting issues when using them. For L2 missions (or L1s) always fit Assault Launchers. Hvy Assault Launchers aren't much use in missions, but excel in PvP. Heavy Launchers are L3 mission weapons which you may try in a Cruiser when you are well skilled for it. Of course there are exceptions but that is the general rule.

My understanding of the ship bonus is to the missiles themselves, not the launcher. Check the wording, there bolded to stand out;

Special Ability: 5% bonus Kinetic Missile Damage per skill level and 10% bonus to Light, Heavy Assault and Heavy Missile Velocity per level.
So whether i use the Standard missile launcher or the assault missile launcher, i still get the bonus to the light missiles that i use in them.

Edited by: Ruban Spangler on 22/10/2009 16:14:34 Don't bother with standard launchers on a Caracal. You don't have any fitting or range issues and so just end up with inferior DPS compared to AMLs. Bene Gesserit is recruiting. |

You're right, I wasn't thinking straight. But there is some advantages to AMLs over Standards, RoF and Quantity of missile loaded.

The exception its 'level 3 missions' or 'caldari missile cruise and batlecruise vessel (t1, t2, t3 and faction)'? _
