With the lack of local in wormholes, I got to thinking of a mod that would be useful for both W-space and k-space 0.0 alike.
Alarm Bubble: Anchors in null sec, makes a 30km bubble. Anything entering the bubble (uncloaked) triggers the alarm. The alarm then broadcasts in local, either a predetermined message (RP it up!) or if you want to get snazzy, the ship type tripping the alarm. The alarm then cools down for x period of time. The alarm is destroyable, and should use a small amount of fuel with each trigger, so you can't just leave a huge network and have them muck things up.
Thoughts?

Local was put into delayed mode in W-space for a reason.

Its delayed? how long is the delay? Just curious. I thought it only showed you in local if you typed in local chat..

Yes, and that reason was to provide a sense of mystery and logistical difficulty. This doesn't take that away, it's just a utility that serves a useful purpose.
Remember that wormholes only last 24 hrs anyway, so you still have to be diligent about moving these around.

Hmm...at first I rejected this idea completely. After some thought I think it has a lot of merit. Why not have the "alarm" be launched from a probe launcher, have a finite "burn time" and have a visible detection radius similar to a warp bubble. The probe would alert the launching ship if another ship comes in to its "detection sphere".
You could launch it near w-hole openings and you would know that someone had entered the system and the ship that enters would know that there are others in the system. It would give a prober incentive to find all of the w-holes in a system and also force the prober to have to jump from entry point to entry point as the probes burn out if he wants to keep the system covered.
I like it

Actually, I like that addendum even more. Means 'scout' ships can actually do some in system scouting.

"Delayed mode" means that you don't show up until you chat.

Get a core probe launcher, make a filter for probes and ships, drop the probe at your site and set the distance to 4-8AU and scan occasionally. As soon as you see 4 probes pop up on scan, gtfo to your safe.

This is no different from just hitting SCAN on the directional periodically. I'm talking about making something that passively alerts you to things in it's range.

perhaps expand the concept a bit?
apply local delay to 0.0 forcing the use of alarms to monitor gates etc
enemy covert jumps in, pops the alarm. alarm squawks when popped - the occupants know something is up, but they cant see local spike.
you then have to hit the scanner or some such to find out who's knocking.
would make black ops gangs much more fun too....
