Locked threads can still be read and they usually offer a lot of lolz. They offer a record of what people have said and done, so I oppose deletion without a strong reason. Good mods/admins follow the principle, that you use the least necessary force to get the job done. Deletion should be only used as a last resort or if the user requests it. Even when requested a lock would usually be a better option.

They stand as a warning to others, to make the forum rules clear to people. Otherwise lots of people would keep reposting topics that were being deleted because they didn't realize there was something wrong with it. ----------------------------------------------------

But, based on my readings of these forumses, the peoples go on to do so many times in the anyways..........no?
I see a pointe of leaving the signpost as marker of rules, but it seems much useless by the actions of the peoples who do these same things over and again...........
Thank you for the answers.

I've been a mod before. Generally I'd lock and archive (not delete) threads in which questionable or trolling behavior was displayed by a particular user. If that user popped up on my radar again, it was useful to be able to look at their behavior previously - since, in the case I decided to ban them (for a temp period or perma), I could utilize the history to support my argument for expulsion. I never deleted anything unless, say, it was full of grotesque imagery (don't ask) or was generated by a bot.
So yeah, I'd say it's good moderator procedure to simply lock threads that have gone wildly off topic or contained questionable dialogue or behavior.

An interesting feature of the forums is that when threads are deleted, the forum page breaks don't readjust. If a forum has a lot of posts deleted you get pages with only a few threads on.
This was most noticeable when the ISK sellers were spamming the forums with keylogger links. Some little-used forums ended up with very small or empty pages.

I've had two posts locked this week, quite an achievement as Id never had any locked in my years of posting on forums. They were put under the generic term 'spam' although they were not strictly spam at all, they were genuine questions. They were serious posts under the guise of humour which does not work well on international forums so they were locked for good reason rather than moved. They were designed to provoke but nothing like some of the posts that are not locked (like the carebear/PVP posts which are designed to grief, being puerile at best and highly aggressive at worst with only a pretence at being constructive)
So locking or not is inconsistent and depends on subjective judgement. In any event don't expect consistency. CCP owm these boards so whatever they decide is the law:)
EDIT: Some posts get locked or moved purely because they were reported by someone with a grudge irrespective of merit. RVB had one recently when the post was for new players in the new players forum. The fact some new players will miss out was irrelevant.
