Edited by: Evelgrivion on 25/10/2009 10:49:54 A golden opportunity is staring us in the face in the form of the infrastructure hub and its myriad upgrades. In their current design form, they are in-space activity boosters that make things better. These are good functions, but they could serve as so much more. As they are, you bolt three different upgrades to it, each conferring system improvements. These facilities are about the size of a Titan, but can't do much else.
The Tech 3 Outpost Anyone who has read the Flogging the Dead Horse thread knows all about the modular space structure concept, and this idea is an extension of it. The functional core of the new infrastructure upgrades are the infrastructure hubs. They are the foundation on which you construct your deep space facility, and the platform from which you could simply upgrade your solar system, or lay the groundwork for a new type of Outpost.
These designs are racially agnostic. With additional bits and bobs, more racially characteristic motifs can be added and any "tech 3 outpost" can thematically belong to any of the four races.
Exhibit A
To utilize this variety of the infrastructure hub, functional extenders that provide the supporting framework for the various space station services. Clones can't be moved and minerals can't be refined without the ability to get things from Point A to Point B.
Exhibit B
One can just as easily install two upgrade arms if they really wanted to.
Exhibit C
To establish the structure as more than a glorified ratting booster, dedicated control areas are needed. Exhibit D is just that; an immense facility that houses and coordinates the various activities that can take place in the space station to be.
Exhibit D
A separate, but arguably more important facility is the docking bay. This is the foundation for docking and the place where repairs would take place - if you pay for the repair facility, that is.
Exhibit E -- Sorry, no exhibit for a repair facility
Infrastructure hubs have the potential to become a new wave of space station for the dark recesses of null security space. An ISK sink can be created by having these diverse functions cost more than their ordinary counterparts, but players get the power to create flexible, more unique structures.
Exhibit F, now with Medical and Refining capacities!
Anything from a factory to a super-capital docking bay could be added to these mega-facilities. For extra zest, these facilities could easily be destroyable, making their enhanced abilities come at the risk of being completely annihilated.
If so inclined, please provide your feedback on my latest idea (CCP headache inducing, I'm sure)

t3 infrastructure hubs that can be attached to the dead horse POS concept.
there are many things an IH could do that normal POS's cant. medical bays, repair facilities and docking capabilities come to mind.
edit: also second in a dead horse thread

third person to flog this horsey good thing i trained Flogging V and cat o' nine tails V for the old thread.
quality post and excellent visuals to drive the point home.. as usual.
please tell me you are running for CSM so i can drum up votes.
might be worth a shot to re-post both horse posts to the assembly hall so they can be raised with CCP. "Misina Arlath

I think it is almost pointless to get fixated on this one idea, which doesn't also incorporate an idea about how the structures are going to work with game mechanics.
It's not that I couldn't like the models, but I fear it will rule out other ideas.
I dislike the way the modules intersect with other modules. Too big and crude imo.

I didn't really see a reason not to keep the existing game mechanics concepts as they are - IE, you tack on different pieces of equipment to do what CCP is already planning to do with them.
As for the models themselves, they're just cheap proof of concepts that I threw together in about 90 minutes; they're not particularly thought out and finished.

Edited by: CCP Incognito on 29/10/2009 07:36:20 What the artists have come up with is much more involved, but for technical reasons, and manpower limits. These will not be in for this release :) We have heard this idea and like it also.
This was always our intention for the Hubs and it is unfortunate it won't be ready for release :(
Guess you can say great minds think alike :)

TBH I have been lurking there for months. And as it was on star bases and we aren't looking at those at the moment didn't seem right to post. Like I said we liked the idea, but we need to get some graphics changes and those take time. Those guys schedules makes mine look like I am on vacation.
So we used the idea for the Hub, but like I said we ran into some technical manpower problems and can't do it yet, so we are making a standalone structure that will hopefully be replaced with the modular one later.

We are using the Hubs to prove the tech, If it works and has been polished it will be ready if we revisit the star bases. And there are many people from both the staff and the players that want star bases looked at. It is on the backlog, that doesn't mean it will show up any time soonÖ.

If you have manpower issues, hang around outside art colleges and universities. Identify the CGI students that like scifi through wiretaps and remote surveillance, then drive by on graduation day, stuff them into the back of a black ford panel van, and ship em out to Iceland

My biggest gripe with CCP on the forums, is their tendency to watch threads of popular ideas, but not give any feedback till they are about to implement it, or something very similar.
Specificity; The dead horse has been flogged for over 3 years, that's THREE YEARS!! and very little response from CCP, or the CSM; only 3 or 4 posts total.
But also in general: I have been reading up on the various thread fir tweaking and/or balancing stuff, but after about page 5 of some times over 30, no more posts from CCP. We have no idea if it is still being read, if you no longer want feedback, if you even care about the rest of the thread.
Just an acknowledgement from CCP that they are reading the thread, even just a simple, "Hello, still reading the thread, keep the feedback coming." or, "This idea has come to my attention, and is: on the soon(tm) list/being looked at internally/something we have discussed with the CSM/never going to happen.
I understand that there is a team in CCP dedicated to trawling the forums for good ideas, but from reading the forums these last 3 years I've been playing Eve, I never would have guessed, from the lack of response given in a large number of popular threads. I'm not asking CCP to post in every thread they read, just please post more often. Even if it adds nothing to the discussion, a response from CCP can make all the bumping/flogging/waiting less painful.

Yes it would be nice, a lot of us aren't dedicated to form trolling. we just read threads while code compiles, db updates, ...
The other problem which is truly unfortunate is some people, a minority for sure, view a CCP post as a endorsement of a idea (the fish was 2" long), and then others treat those comments like gospel( the fish was 4" long) and then someone complains that CCP promised that feature or idea (the fish was 12" long). And that makes sad devs :(
We farm ideas from the forms and I personally enjoy reading ideas, no matter how wacky, serious, wining, or just plain stupid. It all goes in and gets mixed together and cool ideas and solutions come out the other end. These solutions have been filtered by experience, and modified based on a technical requirements/ limitations.
But posting on every good, bad, crazy, funny idea would be allot of work and I wouldn't get any coding done. So unfortunately there is not allot of posts.
I know some devs post with there game characters to revive a good idea or to spur on more debate of a good idea, or to get people to consider a slightly different approach. So even thought you don't see a nice blue bar, we are there. :)

So what I take away from the current state of things:
1. The current infrastructure hubs are already what Evel is wanting, its just that the modular attachments are 'invisible' and are all part of the parent structure cause the artists didn't have time to model all the attachy bits.
2. These hubs are a proof of concept for a dead horse style pos, which will eventually happen, it will just take a bit longer cause of the backlog for the artists.
Sweet.
Also, lets look at things that 'need' to get done before CCP can look at modular poses: pre-dominion: 1. Finish the planets 3. Finish the titan graphics swaps for the new superweapon. post-dominion, pre-planetary interaction: 2. upgrade the background nebula to be as epic as the new stars and planets 3. Create all structures involved in planetary interaction. 4. add the modular bits to the infrastructure hubs 5. create any new ships that are coming out with PI. (Frig sized T3 for starters) post-planetary interaction, pre-incarna: 6. Finishing Incarna 7. Any new ships coming with it.
Since we don't really know what else is coming in Incarna besides WIS, I really can't plan ahead farther then that, but besides that, it looks like after the summer expansion, CCP might be able to start working on modular poses.
Also, if your needing of a way to implement this idea, its actually really easy. You remake all the models and the necessary bits to go with the new poses. Then make it so any new poses going up are built with all their modules connected. The only issue would be that the pre-dead horse poses wouldn't need the connectors, but maybe you could make people attach the number of connecter bits regardless. Yes this would result in a lot of halfway poses, but, with the option of having an awesome new and well layed out pos, there are probably a lot of people who would have no problem spending a few hours re-setting up.

Putting it that way I think you just killed my sense of hope.... :P
Yea we are looking at it a bit more generically, basically the T3 ships have code that welds 5 and only 5 pieces of geometry together. We need one that will weld N pieces together.
Behind the scenes the POS code needs to be completely re factored to be able to handle this also, so the task is a bit bigger than it looks from the outside.

Na we would take a look at all the pos that are out there and what is anchored and online, then assemble a star base with those bits and that is what you would have.
There are allot of things to think about yet, like what to do with structures that need to be out side the shield?

To be honest there is not much to do with these structures as they do not need changing. Unless you are considering moving them back into the shields or removing the bubble shield.
but what would be nice would be to is to have both this and the pos threads merged into one or both made skicky threads so that the transfer of information from one thread to the other can be made better.
