Can someone tell me how bumping works?
Does it only work when ships of the same size are bumping another ship of a similar size or smaller?
For example, can a battleship bump a freighter?
How about a carrier - does a carrier travel fast enough to bump a freighter?
thanks

Any ship can bump any ship. How good of a bump you will get depends on the mass of your own ship, the mass of the ship you are bumping and the speed which you're going at. A Battleship can most certainly bump a Freighter, but what I prefer as a 'bumping tool' (since the nerf of nano BS) is for the most part a 100mn MWD Vagabond. The oversized MWD gives you a ton of mass and due to the nature of the ship (and the MWD) you go very fast. With 100mn MWD HACs you can bump carriers and dreads well outside of dock range with just one bump.
Bumping is used a lot in PvP - be it to keep capitals outside of docking range/forcefields or to keep Battleships from reapproaching gate it is a mechanic that you will cherish learning. Go test it with a friend or on unsuspecting people on autopilot around Jita area.
And if you really have never bumped before - just smash into the hostile at full speed. If it's going at zero speed the angle at which you come in will not matter. If the hostile is moving you need to bump it from the direction it is facing.
Hostile is the X, you are the Y, Z is the station. <>'s indicate which direction you and him are moving.
X>> ----- <<<Y - Z
If you bump anyone properly he will be thrown off course and you will be free to shoot the living crap out of him. _________________________

This is considered harssment. If you keep bumping people for the lolz and are reported you may get in trouble with a certain banhammer - it is ok to do it when you want to prevent a target from warping though.
BS rats in lowsec and 0.0 likely wont find the petition system so go play with them if you really need to practise badly.
Also, I believe some recent patch gave the mass of the bumper a much higher factor than it used to be. Suas' hint of fitting an oversized module to a ship, simply to add to it's mass must be pretty important now, next to the speed of course.

How do you aim? Do you just use approach? I remember a bit ago I tried ramming a BC with my frig, maybe I just didn't have the mass. but it didn't seem to do anything. ________________________________________________ ôI would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.ö -Thomas Jefferson |

No it isn't.
If you bump bump bump bump for no particular reason repeatedly then yes you can be punished. BUT...even then...now if you were denying a particular person access to a star gate because...you were say...contracted for asset denial then...that is perfectly legal. So is 1 off bumping.(bumping A person 1-2 times just for the heck of it.)
Bumping "people" for lolz is okidokie. Bumping "person" for lolz...is not.

Edited by: Suas on 28/10/2009 14:39:55 Harassment, meh - just don't continue doing it on the same person of course. Just test it a bit on random people.

If the person is not moving and neither are you you can simply use approach. You have to realize that just the slightest movement can mess it up and send you flying past your target.
And most likely in your case you simply didn't have enough mass for it. To bump a BC you'd want something atleast cruiser-size. ;) _________________________
