A few other games have offered lifetime subscriptions, and I'm wondering how many people would be willing to spend ~$200 on a lifetime subscription to EVE?
Is this something that has been considered?

Those few other games are actually on the verge of folding. They want to hopefully screw as much money out before turning their servers off.

The games that offer lifetime subs don't expect their subscribers to stay more than 6 months.
It would be economical suicide to offer life time subs for less than a year worth of subscription considering the current retention rate, say 5 years worth and it would still be a bad idea for CCP to do.

$200 amounts to just over 10 months of game time if you pay every month, how is this a good deal for CCP? If the price was about twice that then maybe they would consider offering such a service. I doubt many EvE players will bite as the agreement would be that the player gets to play until the servers are shut down (which could be whenever CCP deems necessary) or they are banned (For whatever reason that might be).
EDIT:
However time limited offers seems to work out just fine for them so why take it too far? Also, i can bet that these potential "lifers" would go on the forums demanding stuff to be done in their name as they now "own" a part of the eve game. Silly but i bet that is how it's gonna go down eventually!
My opinions belong to me, you can't have them!

Edited by: Khemul Zula on 26/10/2009 16:21:00 Generally you don't introduce lifetime subscriptions when your product has been growing rather successfully for multiple years.
Usually not a good idea to discount an item that doesn't have trouble selling on its own.
(plus it may not be as successfull as people think. consider how many people already pay nothing for their account [not counting time].)

EVE's average user lifespan is somewhere in-between 8 to 12 months and actually rising. Most other MMO's average user lifespans are around 4 months, probably much less than that for those particular MMOs that do offer some form of "lifetime subscription".
In order to keep the ratios decent, CCP would have to charge at least 1000 for a "lifetime sub" instead of 200, and a much more decent estimate would be 1500, even 2000 per "lifetime sub". Would YOU pay 1500 EUR for a lifetime, single-account EVE subscription ?
Also, you can always take 3000 EUR, stick in in a bank deposit, and keep paying EVE out of the interest. At the end, if/when you decide to quit, you still have your 3000. Long story short, EVE won't get a lifetime sub option.

Keep in mind, that it is the people who continue paying, that make sure further development is possible. Lifetime subscribers would only pay their part until a specific point. After that they would stop contributing to further development and would just use up server resources.
So in the long run it is better for CCP and the people who want to see EVE keep going for years to come, meaning the people who would benefit from such a deal, to not accept any such offers.

In my opinion a lifetime subscription is a sign that the devs dont plan on supporting the game for much longer and are trying to grab as much money as possible. The day Eve does a life time sub is the day that the clock starts for its demise. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

CCP still owes the banks money, and they do pay some amount of interest on the money still owed, so at a certain (ludicrously high) value for the lifetime sub (somewhere between 1500 and 3000), CCP would actually benefit from offering this option. However, I doubt there would be many (if anybody) that would take that offer.

The lifetime subscription is a tool best suited for 3 purposes. All detrimental to longterm income, but when not applied there's unlikely to be a longterm income at all:
- Recouperating development cost at launch. - Raising capital for development/maintenance. - Halting declining subscriber numbers.
None of these apply to EVE.

Thats right, eve doesn't have a level cap.
When 'bored' of eve and your not playing, there's a good chance your still paying
Wouldn't be much fun now would it when you do 'come back' (normaly around content update time for most), and you have 2-4 months of smelly pre-reqs to level up before you can use said 'new content'
The never ending skill training despite it's obvious advantages is a double edged sword.
Lifetime sub, it'd cost them millions, never happen

I'd pick up a lifetime sub. Not having to budget it in with my bills every 2 months would be nice. I pay with 60d GTC, so I budget in $34.99 every 2 months. Easy to do, but annoying. This 5 minutes between posts crap needs to stop, NOW.

I think there have been lifetime subs for contest prizes at some point. I don't see them being up for sale unless CCP need capital suddenly and their credit rating strikes me as pretty good currently.

I reckon they're credit rating is beyond pretty good.
But then R&D costs money.
In fact I'd be pretty miserable if I saw a list of all they had to pay for each month. Just a list mind you, not the actual figures.
Don't forget they have three bases of operation and a server farm in the UK too, and the accountants in each country, and the tax haven accounts.
It's scary how the items build up.

What "decent ratios" are you talking about? 3000 EUR is about 22 years worth of Eve at the yearly rate. If the average lifespan is (as you say) 12 months then your "decent ratio" seems to be calculated based upon charging players over 20 times more than they would (on average) otherwise pay. That seems a bit more like Shylockery than just a "decent" return to me.
True, your 1500 estimate is only 11 times more than the average (according to you) player would pay but that still seems a hell of a lot above a "decent ratio" to me.

So to recap your original argument:
Originally by: Akita T crap, crap, made-up crap, crap crap, baseless crap, crap
Long story short, EVE won't get a lifetime sub option.
Thanks, it's much easier to treat it with the proper consideration that way.

i would pay possibly as much as $300AU for an unconditional lifetime sub.
i would get one for each account, and never worry about subs again. would be worth it for the convenience.

If eve offered lifetime subscription... it would be hard to decide. obviously something is wrong as eve has a 20 year plan and lifetime subscription for something like that is crazy. It would come down to two things, do I trust ccp to eventually fire the guy who is smoking pot and offering this plan or do I think this pot head is the new wave of ccp and run while I still can.
easy choice, I'd take it and when they fire this guy I'll make em keep their deal of lifetime subscription by copious amounts of forum whineage. ------------------------------

Actually Akita's numbers arn't all that strange.
Think of it this way. A lifetime subscription has to be roughly the expected lifetime of the game (plus a discount), otherwise the company loses out big time in the long run and some people up top get very very angry. If you expect the game to last 1 year, you make it worth about 7-8 months. If you expect the game to last 10 years, you make it worth 8-9 (maybe 7 if desperate) years worth of game time. Considering how long EVE has been running successfully, how much has been invested in recent upgrades, and future plans already talked about, we know CCP at least seems to expect another 5 years. Expecting 10+ years isn't all that crazy. Hell 15-20, while maybe a bit optimistic isn't a entirely crazy expectation
