If there are 4 waves in a class 3 WH and several cans, can you hack the cans whilst tanking the 1st wave or will this cause more sleepers to spawn?

usualy you can't hack when there are pirates , you need to kill them first.

OP, presumably you meant Radar not Ladar?
In wormholes you can hack the cans whilst tanking the rats. Furthermore the de-spawn trigger is (in my experience) killing a rat in the second or third wave of guardians. So you can hack a can, warp out, warp back in again and hack another can. But if you're fighting the rats and warp out you can lose the whole site. This really matters when the sites start spawning battleships in the third or fourth wave...
In my experience no additional rats have spawned when I have hacked (or failed to hack) a can. However some of the more advanced Frontier sites I haven't tried because they come with dual warp scrambling (I believe) battleships and I wasn't sure that I'd be able to get away or kill them before my tank broke if I went in.

Been doing c3 Radar and Magnetometric sites a lot lately, and i can tell you for sure, you can kill all ship except for the trigger one, warp out to get a ship with codebreaker/ analyzer modules, hack the cans, and come back to get the sleepers are your leisure.
Its worth mentioning though that 1 time out of 4 or so, warping out after cleaning those cans, the site will despawn, wether or not you have cleared all the rats or tanked the single remaining ship of the first wave.
As for higher end wh systems, i have read that trying to hack cans there will get you more sleepers appearing, so better not try it alone.
