Hey all. As a new player here I am trying to wrap my head around a few things.
I've been using EVEMon and I must say that the program itself is invaluable and great thanks to the creators !
Nevertheless I have been looking into the skill planner aspects of the program and, more specifically, attribute optimization based on previously trained skills and skills that are to be trained.
One thing that came up was when the program noted I didn't have enough skills to train to fill the yearly period. Now I do understand you can only remap your attributes every year or so, but really, is it common for people to plan their skills for the next year? Is that a better approach to everything?
I mean in all seriousness it makes sense having everything planned accordingly so you may train through your year worth of skills quickly, but how common is this a trend among EVE pilots? To plan a year in advance.
Thanks everyone for any insight that can be offered.

I guess its a common thing to train for a year or more
...almost as common as to change whatever plan you have. _
I like to play this game because it make my in-game actions and archievments to mean something in-game. |

The more common practice is to have multiple training plans per character depending on the different goals you want to accomplish. Added together, they can add up to over a year. It's a habit from before attribute re-mapping was introduced, so while it helps in organizing different goals into different plans, it's a bit difficult to figure out the re-mapping stuff because EVEMon can't see all the plans at once (perhaps something they could look into developing - some sort of hierarchy of the different plans).
To answer your question more directly, even if you can't fill up your entire year's worth of training, go by the principal attributes you'll need to train the skills you've planned. Use the free attribute re-maps you get as a new player to change stuff around once you figure things out, then don't worry about it. Chances are you'll know soon enough what path you're taking in EVE, which in large part determines the main attributes you'll want.

It's not a bad idea to plan out your skill plan every 6 months or so.
I'll try to look at my current attributes, look at what I want to train and try to optimise as much as I can with the attributes I have for a few months. Then I'll slot in an attribute re-map and optimse for another 6 months. When that 6 months is up, I'm still stuck with the attributes, so I'll plan another six months to get what I can out of them and think about how I'll remap 6 months further down the line.
It's all a bit of a theory right now as attribute remaps are new. I'm just going to see how I go. Planning more than 6 months isn't really going to work for me - I keep getting side tracked, but I think I can probably hold fairly well to a 6 month plan.

I have a 760 day plan for one of my chars... and it started out at over 900 days.
The only thing I tend to change in my plan is the order of the skills. For example if I come to love a specific ship then I might bump up the Recon 5 or HAC 5 a bit so I can use it quicker but that's about it. Attribute optimization doesn't make much sense if you use shorter plans or change the plan every few days.

Originally by: Alessandro Giordano HI mean in all seriousness it makes sense having everything planned accordingly so you may train through your year worth of skills quickly, but how common is this a trend among EVE pilots? To plan a year in advance.
Most EvE players start out with only a short term plan. This is good, 'cause they don't know the game yet.
After some experience, they end up with a medium-term goal and a short-term goal. Medium-term might be 'I want to fly battleships in missions' while the short-term goal is to improve fitting skills and fly missions in BCs.
And after yet more experience, most EvE players come up with short, medium and long-term goals. "I wanna fit T2 guns", "I wanna live in a WH", "I wanna fly Titans". They'll assemble all that into a multi-year plan in EvEMon.
But the key thing is while they've got long-term goals, they are open to change. If it turns out you just love HACs and decide you hate Titans, you change your goals and your plan. It's unusual to change plans in such a way that a remap ends up hurting you (Ex: Industrial folks tend to stay industrial even if their plan changes, and most Industrial skills rely on the same stats.)
