Just incase anyone is looking to pick up a new MacBook Pro. Apple recently just slashed by almost 50% its upgrade prices on RAM this is a massive shift in Apple strategy here, and will bring RAM prices inline with RAM vendors w00t!

was that really an issue before?
i never bought a machine directly from apple. the apple shops around here generally offer about 10% off the official prices and when you ordered extra ram they just put in matching 3rd party ram for typical daily market prices.

Edited by: Flynn Fetladral on 27/10/2009 22:54:37 Before these price drops, to upgrade to 8Gb of RAM from 4Gb on a Macbook Pro would of cost you Ç999 or I believe in the US it was going for $990 so this is a pretty darn big price drop. Apple always massively over charged. Before unibody this is not an issue, just buy from a 3rd party RAM vendor and install it yourself or do as you was saying in your post.
Anyway, Apple dropping the prices imho is a big step forward.

I always bought my Macs with the minimum of ram and then bought direct from Crucial Memory at 1/4 the cost of what it would have been to have it come with the machine.

This is how I've done it.
The "guts" of a Mac are really not much different than that of a PC, so where it is possible to do your own upgrading, it will be very cheap versus getting it from Apple.

I totally agree with you guys :) However, opening up the new unibody Macs (I believe) voids your warranty unlike with the last generation which had user serviceable batteries and access to the RAM and HDD. So if you got a 3 year Apple Care on your New MBP and you void it via trying install way way cheaper 3rd Party RAM from a Vendor it's gonna kinda suck. So for Mac Pro and iMac users this does not really mean anything, cos they can install their own RAM.

The RAM and hard drives in unibody MacBooks and MacBook Pros are user-replaceable. It may seem a little intimidating to do so, but it doesn't void your warranty.
