Edited by: Jacob Mei on 27/10/2009 21:33:36 IĈm asking this out of curiosity and hopefully someone can explain it to me. My family and I have an HD TV and a HD package from Comcast. The other day as I was playing with the channels I paged between the regular version and the HD version of various channels and had noticed that the HD versions, while sharper, were shrunk in that it didnĈt fill the whole screen where as the regular versions did. Why is that? Is this normal for television or is Comcast ripping us off (again) in that they are merely compressing the resolution of the signal to make it seem like HD? I fix that by using the zoom feature on the TV to get the picture to fit

I did that but noticed the picture seemed to degrade a bit, which is why I am wondering if instead of an actual HD signal we are getting the standard channel but compressed to hide any imperfections in the footage. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

I guess that if the show you're watching at the moment is not shot in HD, there's not much you could do about it... you're getting the regular-resolution version as a frame inside a HD-resolution screen. You'll have to wait for a show that's shot and broadcast in true HD to see the difference. Also, I guess you could argue about actual HD resolution... maybe your TV is a 1080 but the HD channels are 720 and the regular ones 480, and your TV auto-rescales 480 to 1080 but it leaves 720 alone unless you force it... or god knows what else.
Of course, they could simply be ripping you off
