Note: This is probably a stupid question and an even more stupid topic. Flame away if you must, I almost expect it

That's what I have to work with, scanning wise. I have a few dozen Probes setup with 2x Small Gravity rigs for scanning (I do a lot of ninja salvaging in Dodixie). Now my question is, can I use this to scan down possible targets for my Rifter? Really, I can probably only take on Frigates/Destroyers/Cruisers right now, since most of my SP is in Learning Skills and Navigation Skills (1400m/s with T2 Afterburner in a PvP fit Rifter), and I'm not planning on getting the skill for T2 Small Projectiles until Gunnery hits V in 3 days (Small Projectile Turret is already at V, just gotta buy the skill book and train it up).
Now I can scan down a Battleship in 2-3 minutes no problem, but is it even worth the time going into lowsec and trying to scan down these smaller ships sitting in missions/safespots? Or are they really just too small to pickup? I'm only asking because I've been trying belt solo piracy for hours a night for a week and have yet to find a target.

Amamake 3-1.. Problem solved.
Istvaan Shogaatsu: As with most such situations the answer is simple: rob them first. |

If you are gonna be on your own in a Rifter you will be blobbed to hell and back in Ama 3-1. Try Egghelende and just use the D-Scanner.

Anything you need to probe in low sec will probably be a lot bigger than your ship (that doesn't mean you couldn't kill it) the rest will be in the belts etc so the scanner will suffice. The one thing that will/could work is trying to grab people hiding in a safespot.
The issue is ofcourse that the expanded launcher takes up a lot of CPU so fitting it on your combat fit frigate isn't going to work (most ships will have issues tbh). You could probe out a target, dock up and refit and then try to grab it but most of the time it's just impractical. In reality you're just better off as a prober/scout for your friends like in TEARS, due to the fitting issues they made sure than probing is the scout's job mostly.
In short; for solo work disregard probes and just make use of the scanner, when in groups be the probing scout. ----------- ADM-I |

There is no good fitting for a rifter that accommodates that scanner and alt scouting/probing, if you have to do it, is only worthwhile if you are in a bigger ship.
I'm quite shocked that you couldn't ask this in alliance chat and get a decent answer, or are suddenly ninjas not what they used to be?

No they are not.
Ninjas stopped being what they used to be ever since the Queen of Dodixie stepped down and that Kah(whatever) dude took over.
For better or for worse, I dunno. Just became 'different'.
(edited to add:) I bet he b1t-cheez you out for posting that here if he hasn't already.

Use both tbh. haveing a covert scout is good if your alone to as well.I used mine to prob dudes out and then drop my gankmega on top of them with the covert scraming them.

Also, always use the dscan until you realize they're in a plex/mission/safe spot, then use the probes.
I can pinpoint a ship in a system in about 20-45 seconds, it would take much longer to get a warp-in with probes. So, use the dscan, THEN the probes if you come to the conclusion that they're not at a celestial/station/gate.

So the best option then is to only probe em out if I know for sure they're in a safespot?
And to clarify, I'm not fitting a Probe Launcher on my Rifter. I have multiple Probe ships fitted with Launchers and Gravity Rigs that I can spread out into lowsec. I'd scan with those, BM it, then jump in the Rifter. Was just curious if I'd ever be able to pick up smaller ships.

Youre going to find 3(4) types of people in losec.
1) Other pirates. They will let you find them, they want pews too. Probes not required.
2) Ratters/missioners who run and dock/safespot/logoff as soon as anyone unfamiliar enters losec. Scanning down with probes will NOT be fast enough to get them, dscanner rarely is (unless theyre not watching local, which does happen from time to time). Sometimes can catch them in belts. May get a few who arent on the ball in a mission or plex?
3) FW Blobs. Best left alone. Once again, scanner not required. (Solo FW players possible, unlikely)
4) I suppose 4 includes people APing through losec (i am amazed how many idiots actually DO do this) and once again, scanner not required.
Im right there with ya on being new to belt piracy and finding targets to be very rare. Either i cant beat them in what im in (theyll be in a cane or harbinger, for example, i am in a rifter) or they dock/log/safe the instant i enter system. TBH i have had much better luck canflipping players in highsec, which *CAREBEARS TAKE NOTE* is WHY we do it. However, when you DO scan someone down to a belt, land on em, and get into a squirrelfight, is 10x more fun than canflipping (usually. I have had some interesting results from canflips!)
Good luck

Don't probe with your combat ship. Not in Ninja'ing, not in lowsec, not ever. PS: This is not part of my signature

I like you guys but your rabble over 'tears' and supporting social lepers like Paul doesn't work in your favour. Why did he leave you anyway?

If only I could find the chatlog from that one. Actually it's in this thread somewhere... just look at the way he talks, I need to find more dummies like this guy. Found his medium pos a little while back but whatÆs a frig pilot to do about that?
