hi all, i've been trying scan probing to find exploration plexes, and i've read most of the guides i can find on the subject. however i cant seem to get a signal any stronger than 50%.
I find the yellow circle, surround it with probes but can't narrow it down. I read somewhere that you shouldn't let probes overlap or something? Or could it be that my character doesnt have decent probe skills yet? He only has astrometrics 4, and no other skills.
Thanks in advance peoples.

Once you find the yellow circle stick 1 probe straight on top of it, then use the other 3 probes to surround it with the yellow circle eventually 'under' all 4 probes scan range. This works everytime for me even tho Im sure we'll get some posters doing it in different ways.
btw i have Astro 3, Astro Range 2, Astro Acq 2.

This, mostly, I would expect. Get Astrometric Rangefinding and Astrometric Pinpointing to 4, and Acquisition to 3, and you'll have a much easier time of it.

I have Astro 4, and the others at 3, EWAR frigate w/ 2 rigs, sisters probes (no launcher) and the +3% hardwiring and there have been about 2 sites so far that I couldn't reel in. Most of the time, I can get a warpable hit w/ just 4 probes formed in a cross using the interior alignment circles of the probe spheres. Occasionally, I've had to go to 6 probes in the same formation with the 2 extra ones in the front and back to make the cross 3-dimensional. Skill up and get the best equipment you can afford and you'll start seeing results.

thanks for the replies guys, are any of you able to confrim whether or not having probes overlapping each other has a negative effect?
gonna give it another go this afternoon.

You're supposed to overlap them. All of the probes you have in space need to have the dot within their scan globe to get a 100% (warpable) result. -- Director of Misfits, Domination Killer, Doesn't Like Bunnies |

I simply have 4 probes on the same plane with the movement arrow pointing at the target. Sometimes called a diamond pattern. The probes overlap and are 0.5 to 1 radius apart.
I think the OP may be confused by pre-Apocrypha scanning where probes couldn't overlap.

thanks for the tips, got a signal up to 75% today before i had to go out :(
think i just need to practice more and get those skills trained.

I do it the way Tau Cabalander described (I think). Basically I have 4 probes on the same plane and the directional arrows pointed at the signal. For example, like:
----X---- X DOT X ----X---- It takes me about 12-15 minutes to get a 100% hit. Sometimes I do lose the signal though. Other times, usually grav sites, I get like 99% but can never get it to 100.

yea i've had 4 probes round it, the arrows pointed right at it when its on 85%, and i cant get it any higher. gonna try again after skilling up overnight i reckon.

Make sure you make the probes smaller. If you have a yellow dot and all 4 probes are overlapping the dot, it could be scan strength ore something.

Also if you are not using an astrometrics frigate, you may want to switch to that. It gets a bonus to scanner strength. There is one of these for each race.
For the best results possible, you need a covops frigate (tech 2).

Things that help * T1 Probing Frigate (good, improves with Frigate skill) * Covert Ops Frigate (better at Covert Ops skill 3 and higher) * Gravity Capacitor Rigs * Sisters probes * Sisters probe launcher
With a T1 probing frigate, rigs, and level 3 Pinpointing and Rangefinding, you can probe everything. Sisters probes are helpful (the launcher is rather pricey so I don't use it).

I just used this guide to learn how to probe, it works really well for me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miOnzIgrcuo I didn't pay attention to what he said, just what he did, and duplicated that :)

This sums it up very nicely.
One thing that wasn't mentioned is what probe you are using. If you are using combat probes, they only reduce to 0.5AU. Using the regular core probes will go down to 0.25AU.
Also, the angle between the probes is a part of the calculation. If you are setting your probes up in a single horizontal plane in square formation, the angle between them is 90 degrees. Setting the probes up in a tetrahedron configuration with the dot centered inside will make the angle more 60 degrees and give you an increased strength.
If you have good probe skills, it wont' matter, but you need to take advantage of every bonus you can get. Now that you have astro IV, you should get the other astrometric support skills and start training them all to lvl I, then II, then III. I wouldn't train beyond III unless you know you are going to be doing a lot of probing.

i found this worked for me, i always get 100% on all targates in high, low and WH space, i dont have the advance probing skills either, first watch this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op6p3a2bvwk always use a covert ops with following fitting http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/2479-Exploration-Setup.html the rigs are meant to be small ones. i use this setup and NEVER fail. the one thing you must remember is to start your probing with your probes about 8au apart (this should give you good coverage) and as you zero in bring them closer together once the targate is yellow your probes should be no more than 0.5au from each other, dont worry about them over lapping they are meant to be, doing this i always get 100%, i then BM the site and get out my HAC. hopes this helps.
Oh and use core probes unless you are looking for a ship.
