A MacBook if you're only going to be playing EVE isn't a terrible idea (or the 15"/17" with dedicated card + Bootcamp/windows). I mean I love my 13" MBP but its far from a gaming laptop and you can buy much more for your money with another brand.
If you're looking for a good real gaming laptop I vote +1 for Sager.

I use a Compaq Presario CQ60 with NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G and AMD Athlon X2 and I can run 1 client on all high settings very smoothly with about 40 FPS. Running 2 gets a little choppy until I tweak eve settings a bit. Try this if you dont have it already, its a program that cuts all the uneccassary crap running in the background:

I have a HP Pavilion dv7 laptop. I play two accounts all the time, in windowed mode, with efffects turned on. Never had a problem. Best part, it was under 900 bucks at Walmart!
good luck

Consider a Lenovo T60p. Older laptop with 2gigs of memory, duo core 2.0, 120gb hard drive and 512mb of dedicated graphics. You will need Omega custom gamer drivers as the default drivers are tuned for Autocad. Cheap and runs Eve Online beautifully. However, I haven't tried it with 2 accounts. You also will need a fresh install of Windows XP as it has the worst bloatware I've ever seen.

Gotta give another vote for the Asus machines. Got this one a coupla months back, and it screams.
I've successfully run 4 clients off of it at once. One maxed graphics, other three set for max performance.

Originally by: illford baker buy a powerful laptop which will basically be heavy portable desktop, as it would have a bad battery life, you will half to alt tab if you don't have a external screen. if you buy one with a dedicated vid card you can probably get by for like 3 hours max if you got the vid card on high running on a 12 cell battery. and if you got a quad core with 2 sli/Xfire vid card, you can buy the biggest battery on the market, it wont help your battery life, gotta be plugged in at all times. i don't recommend it if your gonna take it everywhere, but if your looking for something you can take to lan parties, a expensive laptop like this, that will rock your socks.
You wouldn't want to run battery when playing a game anyways, you take a huge performance hit running on batteries.
I've been using an Inspiron 1505E for like 2 years to play EVE, works decently...
You definitely need a cooling pad if you're going to play games you will get your system extremely hot by running any 3d games on it. They cost btwn $20-$50 and really make a difference in extending the life of your laptop (and helps performance too by keeping the machine decently cool).

First off, as others have said, unless you need the mobility, you're better off with a desktop.
Now assuming you're like me, and do need both the mobility and power (in my case for both games and work), then there's some good laptops out there that are suprisingly affordable.
I'm currently using a 3-year old Fujitsu laptop with 2GB of ram and a now-ancient ATI X1400 Mobility graphics chip, and it can dual client just fine (full screen - window mode is too much).
I just bought a new Asus G72Gx-RBBX09, 6GB ram, quad-core CPU, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M graphics, etc. Only $1,299. Unfortunately it's back ordered, but it should be a screamer. I've build desktop PCs using Asus motherboards, and have been pleased with their quality. Hopefully it translates to their laptops.
I would have gone with another Fujitsu, as the price/features have been great when I compared, but since I rely on my laptop for business, I decided to get a brand this time around that I could get serviced easily, which is definitely something you should consider as well (not easy finding a place that can fix a Fujitsu quickly).
Anyway, my US$0.02.

Yes, ASUS screams quality in almost every product they make. Good pick!

Oh wait, it's a laptop. Yuk

Heh, well, once I get the thing we'll see. But I've been pleased with their products in the past, and for the features and price, it was a no-brainer, at least as far as I could see. And a laptop is the only thing I use on a regular basis these days.

I use an Hp dv6000 laptop, its graphics card sucks but at low settings it gets a reasonable 18 fps, sure it ain't pretty, but as a college student myself I can't afford pretty for a long time.
At least I got Windows 7 for 30 bucks...
Just note HP is really bad for crapware so if you buy an HP get ready to start uninstalling the crap they put on there.

Welcome to world of advice giving. It is rather common everywhere people ask for advice on an issue since the individual asking for advice may not be 100% set on the original limit set, or may change their mind based on the advice given.
It definately isn't 'typical of EVE postings', "buy a desktop" is basically a guaranteed response in any forum where someone asks "What laptop should I buy for <insert game here>?".

I've been using an Aspire 7520G for gaming for about 1,5 years now and I'm quite happy with it. Costed me a bit over 800 euros at the time. Specced at: 17" screen, 640GB hard drive space, 4GB RAM, TL-60 2Ghz proc, GF 8600M GS graphics chip. Had Vista installed on it but got rid of that and now using Windows 7 Prof. :]
It runs games quite nicely if you are willing to turn down the graphics a bit.
My only advice is that if you buy a laptop for gaming make sure it has atleast 2 years of warranty and pay that extra few dollars for the extension of the warranty.
Also gaming laptops tend to get quite hot so make sure that whatever laptop you are buying has a half-decent cooling solution (the air intakes and fan(s) aren't in retarted spots on the lappy). Overheating with laptops is a *****. When I'm gaming at home I bought a cooling pad for it (about 30ish euros) and it reduced heat about 7-10 degrees although there is a distinctive humming sound when the cooling pad is at full power (ie. use headphones :] ). ------------------------ Wildly Inappropriately Horny

To the people who are sayng mac won't play games... you do realise that macs have been intel based for years now right? They install XP or Vista with drivers provided by apple. You can spend your whole life never seeing the OSX after the install. Mac Book Pro:
Windows XP Intel Core2Duo 3.06 Ghz 8gb Ram, 500 GB 7200 rpm HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 9600m GT 512mb
Of cause this will run games. And will be much more portable than a "gaming laptop".
What is true however is that macs are very expensive you will pay a premium. This is offset partialy by paying even more :) 300$ or so and geting apple care which for the next 3 years will replace anything and everything that can go wrong with your laptop. And possibly will give you a whole new one.
Macs make good windows gaming PCs, but are not the best price bargains. |

Brought a Macbook Pro as I wanted exposure to more than just MS/Linux OS's. Use OSX 10% of the time and the rest run Windows 7. Also, it has the 9400M NVidia mobility gfx. Runs EVE fine and every other game i've thrown at it. Bear in mind, titles like Crysis etc, you just dont run on a laptop...
Yes it is more expensive than other branded laptops (personally I have always liked HP as we get special rates being an HP Partner @ work) but I get to run three OS's on the machine, OSX Snow Leopard, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.1.
Not to mention, it looks sexier than any other laptop, period.
Dont like my opinion? F*** off.

F*** off yeah, people think macs are for f**s and gays yet don't realize that pretty much the whole open source software programmer and tech community are going for macbooks (and pros).
How can that be, that f** computers have so high penetration in what is the most tech savvy community out there? And then want to listen to advice from 'pro-gamers' or what ever they want to call themselves.
Good price/performance ratio, quality components and best design you can find. Of course f*** off, macs are for ***s and expensive.
