The key difference is that there are consequences in eve when you PVP. When you get killed your stuff does not respawn. You lose it. You lose all that grinding you did to buy and fit your ship.
And I also personally play for the glory of those fights where you are outnumbered and come out victorious. Having more expensive Ships in an engagemet does not gaurantee win.
The beauty is my reason for PVP is completely different then for someone else that does it to watch others suffer, for defense of their space, or to have the best combat eff in the game.

Why?
If I am in a blob-fest it is because someone said I should for some reason.
If I am solo or with a small gang (in my view 5 or under)it is for fun, the rush or a challenge. ---- Proper piracy starts at home. |

You know, it's possible to actually ask people for a fight. There are formal tournaments put on by CCP and there are tournaments organized by corporations and alliances on their own. You can also duel people. There's a website, Eve Arena, that specialized in making matches for PVP.
So if you don't like unmatched fights, you can probably get some seriously challenging ones right at home in highsec.
Personally I'm interested in the challenge of a slightly unfair fight. I want to try killing cruisers with a frigate, killing battleships with a BC, and so on. But I also want to kill as much as possible for money and fun and to get red flashy as soon as possible.

The concept of shouting primary and everyone hammering it really takes the fun out for me. If you get primaried, you go down in seconds. Where's the fun in that? Small gang is ok, against another small gang. 1v1's are hard to find, unless the other 1 or you are in a hauler trying to escape. I would suggest a limit to the number of people who can lock you at any given time, i.e. keep it down to squad size and give your tank a chance to shine, or your offensive skills a chance to shine. The current Eve meme of greatest force at the smallest point, although militarily sound, is no good in terms of challenge and enjoyment.
All in all, the op is right in a way, it's not all that much fun!

EVE is perfect for bullies and those who seriously think ganking others takes skill. This 'taste of tears' thing is hilarious. I've known 5 year olds with more maturity. It seems some have sad lives and need the game to help them sort that out. Its like the game is a reflection of their self esteem or lack of it. I feel sorry for them rather than annoyance, they can't help it really.
But there is also a lot of good PVP in EVE and some great PVP players. PVP in EVE can be great fun but like all things in life if your mixing in with douche bags then you will see the bad side of it only. If you get in with a good bunch of people who have a sense of perspective it will be fun.

Edited by: Nihiliax on 03/11/2009 20:26:26 Well thanks for your responses guys, some interesting comments so far. I particularly like Bonny Lee's suggestion of adopting the challenge to be a good FC - that's not something I had thought of.
Some of the responses, though, make me wonder if they even read my original post or maybe I didn't make myself clear enough. For example:
Originally by: The AEther I don't get it .... the Crow and the Drake pilot ... what were they supposed to do again? Go fly around 20+ jumps to buy two frigates and assemble all parts for them meanwhile hoping you'd stay in belt just to make it fair for you?
No, you are missing the point entirely. That incident was used merely to illustrate the difference between how I approached gaming and how many other EVE players approach it. As someone who is now able to fly an Interceptor I feel a little cheap when I turn up in a belt and pop somebody in a T1 Frig by myself let alone call for a mate in a Battlecruiser to assist in the kill. The Crow was already attacking a foe that he vastly outclassed so why on Earth bring the Drake in?
To respond to other comments made, if I may:
Originally by: Raelyf
In your own situation with the crow and a drake, rather than take the attitude that you got screwed by guys who weren't interested in a fair fight, you should consider what you could have done. Put some thought in it. First, had you watched local and d-scanner, you would have seen him coming a mile off and could have simply ran off. Second, you could have organized a group of friends to engage them. Third, and most fun, you could have fit your incursus to quickly gank the crow, then warped off leaving the drake to emorage.
I didn't feel screwed as such I actually came back in another Incursus and scanned down and attacked the Drake pilot. Remember at this point I am less than 14 days into the game and didn't realise the futility of this course of action. In my mind at the time "It was worth a try"

Not in the slightest. I think you may be too used to reading whine posts and are assuming this is just more of the same. More often than not I am the one destroying somebody elses pride and joy, as you put it. I am not a total PVP newb (though I am far from great at it) I am merely making an observation about the state of the game and how we, as players, interact with it.

This is more what I am talking about. Joe seems to understand my point quite well. The only difference seems to be I am already -10 and flashy.
So again, to clarify, I am not complaining about being blobbed and ganked as much as I am asking how people feel when playing a PVP game in which blob and gank seems to be what passes for the bulk of the action?

Well combat avoidance and high risk aversion seems to be a big feature of EVE too. That's due to the potentially high cost of losing a ship. While that is the case blobs and ganking will be the norm. Its hard for CCP to do anything about this without changing the game to something I do not think they intend (like arenas) But WH's, maybe the new sov changes and corps like RvB are challenging this mentality but its amazing how many are stuck in one type of PVP mindset.

Actually I think I would PvP for the sheer aspect of getting a killmail and for the sheer control fact that my otherwise shattered real life leave me devoid of any feeling towards my fellow man except raw hatred and carnal rage which must be vented in the form of PvP-Trading and part-time High-Sec PvP Mining... Oh, the rush!!!
You will never know the feeling such a pure kill in either zone brings to a person of my humble stature as I see affirmation from a dysfunctional father figure and a over-protective mother figure, and my rejection of my own since of self-loathing, my service in the great war and my seeking to explore my creative talents only to meet in failure and poverty... oh the agony... oh... wait... that was ******, um... *uncomfortable moment of silence*... I do it because the devil makes me *runs away and hides*.

That said, blobbing does not get my juices flowing, which is why I mostly solo.
Originally by: Riedle There is more pew pew than just low-sec piracy. It is too blobby there right now - you can't do it solo.
Well you can - if you don't mind losing alot of ships and pods.
(a) You can do it solo. Rather profitably, too, if you care to ransom on occasion. Most blobs are not too hard to avoid, if you stay out of some of the blobbier places of low-sec. Top belt in Amamake, for instance, is almost always a bad idea.
(b) Losing pods in low-sec means that in 99% of the cases you did something wrong. It's impossible to lock a pod as such after a ship pops, since it's in warp before the lag clears if you did the right thing. Disconnects with aggro could happen, I guess, or computer freezing or such.

Edited by: Havohej on 03/11/2009 22:27:03 I pvp because it's fun knowing I might die. In pve I know I'm only going to die if I pull a room full of aggro and walk away from the computer without turning my tank on. In pvp I know that I could die at any time for any reason that I didn't think of, or simply because the other guy(s) is better than me (note: not 'has more SP than me', I mean if they're 'better at EVE than me')
e: Also, because when I don't die it means I get your stuff... and I like your stuff a lot better than I like my stuff, so I want it.

Edited by: AnonyTerrorNinja on 04/11/2009 00:11:42 Step 1 Spend an hour or so grinding the isk I need to get a shiny new PVP battlecruiser
Step 2 Try and bait people into some PVP (time permitting)
Step 3 Finally get someone to fight, get 'blobbed', counter with whatever means I have available to me
Step 3.1 Get an adrenaline rush as the balance of the fight keeps shifting
Step 4 Adrenaline hits home and my joints stop hurting
Step 5 Finish the fight emerging either victorious or the loser (usually the former)
Step 6 Savour the remainder of the adrenaline rush and lack of physical pain and discomfort while it lasts
This is why I PVP. EVE is the only thing in my life that has ever given me an adrenaline rush, and is the only thing that KEEPS giving me an adrenaline rush.

The Drake pilot simply wanted to be on your killmail. Not to assist the Crow obviously. If you are blaming him for wanting to be on km you're not being realistic.
You play in lowsec and 0.0 for a while and very often you hear people complain about being ganked. Sometimes you get ganked, and sometimes your corp ends up being the gankers. And if you are observant enough you learn that it goes both ways. If your corporation has 20+ people online and you find a pair of pilots roaming about, what are you supposed to do? Tell the other 18 guys to log off? Tell them that they cannot play today because there are only two targets about? If you have an interceptor and read a T1 frigate in belt, are you supposed to let him be and warp off? If your Drake buddy is in fleet and you tell him you got an Incursus pointed, do you also tell him to keep away so you keep the loot an the killmail to yourself?
Originally by: Nihiliax So again, to clarify, I am not complaining about being blobbed and ganked as much as I am asking how people feel when playing a PVP game in which blob and gank seems to be what passes for the bulk of the action?
I find it to be a direct result of pvp in EVE being costly, not staged, and non-consensual. It is a tradeoff that you either accept or ... well there are other games that have PVP besides EVE.
Then of course like one of the posters noted PVP is his way of making ISK. He does not take great risk because that is how he carebears pretty much.

Because:

Well think of it this way... leave all the "where is you honour? I wanted solo!" extravaganza behind, we all, well mostly, play for fun. When someone says a target tackled somewhere, his friend would want to get in kill as well. As you said, this is a game of seeing how much more you can achieve. And for some, this is about killing as much as you can even its just tracking disrupting a shuttle form 150km to be in the mail :)
It's also true that after nano nerf, people are a bit more thoughtful before engaging alone. Before nerf it was like "if it goes bad, I can always get out!". So yes, eve has crossed into a stage where blob is more likely to happen.
In some other cases, people try to avoid the worst case and bring all they got, considering offenders may play some cheap tricks on them you like light a cyno and drop caps or light B-OPs cyno and drop stealthbombers on you. It never hurts to play on the safe side.
So those are some scenarios about why you would probably get blobbed and wouldnt get a fair fight. If you want to improve your solo skills, go to test server and try 1vs1 fights without losing isk. If you want to improve your doging blobs skills, again go to test server, get into a room where people camp it like its real-deal there, say dirty things about their sisters and see if you can get out :)
This is a game, means fun, and not everyone has to have it in the same way, some like easy kills, some like blobs, some like going for the odds...

Edited by: Liberty Eternal on 04/11/2009 10:53:36 PVP requires ABSOLUTELY NO SKILL WHATSOEVER - it is all about the design/expense of the ship and the amount of time spent training. That is it.
I don't know why they call it pvp. It is not like you are even piloting the ship. I play this game for the economic/marketing side, but the pvp side is a joke. There is no individual skill actually involved in the combat, a noob can't possibly kill someone with 6 months skills trained and a better ship, unlike in actual combat games where you have to fly or shoot yourself.
So good thread - you probably feel hollow because it is a pointless exercise in predetermined preparation, an illusion of combat and skill, not the real thing. What is the point of attacking someone with 1 week's experience when you have one year experience? I don't know. It is such a pre-set, boring conclusion who on Earth would find that satisfying? Now, Battlefield 2, Call of Duty, Halo, Il-2 Sturmovik - or World in Conflict, company of heroes - they are really good games where the outcome is in the balance and skill goes against skill. I suppose pvp in EVE is like playing world of conflict where the players who have been paying subscription longest get 100 tanks and the players who just started paying get 1 tank. It's like a reward for giving ccp money.

Edited by: Asuka Smith on 04/11/2009 10:55:22 I like PVP because with a really good kill I am destroying hours or days worth of love and dedication someone poured into a ship. Perhaps it was the ship they got their first kill in, or the first ship they did an L4 in.
Regardless, any attachment they have to the ship is severed by my blasters. I also frequently convert the ISK:Dollar ratio (16,000,000 ISK = $1 ATM) on the EPIC kills to see how many hundreds of dollars I have just destroyed in a callous moment of malice.

Of course the victory has to be against an evenly match opponent. Overwise I would be just like the sad dads in the park who do a victory dance when they beat their 5 year old son at footie.
