Anyone recall the name of the idea that there might be another planet in the same orbit from the sun as us but exactly on the other side of the sun and thus preventing us from seeing it from ground based equipment? The subject recently came up in a class of mine and for the life of me I cant recall if there was an actual name for it.

Dunno, but I recall seeing an old film about a planet on the other side of the sun once.
It was pants.

"Planet X" is the name of this particular theory. It's been generally ignored/mocked by the mainstream scientific community, but keeps a certain "Wouldn't it be cool anyway?!?!" crowd of believers.
Edit to add: Google has taught me that "Planet X" is also used as a secondary name for the Nemesis crowd. So....yeah.

I think I know the film you are thinking of, Gerry Anderson made one on that presumption. I also have a vague idea there is/was a name for that theory, there is a page on it in wiki-pedia under "Counter-earth"

No, Planet X was a hypothetical outer planet that was speculated to exist due to disturbances in Uranus' and Neptune's orbits. Then they took better measurements and noticed there aren't any disturbances and the hypothesis was abandoned. Then some kooks decided Planet X was a cool name and it's an ancient Babylonian alien battlestation that the government is covering up or whatever.
If there was a second Earth, we'd know.

Gravity. Even if we couldn't see it, its gravity would be noticeable through influences it'd have on other observable celestial bodies, like other planets, asteroids and comets.

Well what if those disturbances have been in effect since we started monitoring the galaxy then their would be no "disturbances," just the norm. Correct or incorrect? I want pictures of the exact opposite side of the earth
