I popped out the cash and bought the 27" iMac, which I've had for about a week. Here's a mini-report
Configuration: Imac 27" w/4850 graphics card and 4 Gig memory.
Generally, I have been able to run 1 client nicely at full screen size w/max resolution and max graphics settings. I have run 2 clients, one full screen and one windowed (and high quality graphics settings) also reasonably painlessly. I tried three clients and found that stability was not so good, usually one crashes. Framerates generally run at 30fps or better.
Additionally, I've been able to run 1 client in Parallels version 4. Runs pretty well at medium graphics settings, with only 768 mb assigned to to the Parallels VM (framerate 50-60 on medium graphics settings). I can do this while running a Mac client as well.
My two main problems have been:
1) Eve seems to interact with Bluetooth. After about 30-45 minutes of play, I will lose the bluetooth connection to my wireless keyboard and Mouse. I have been collecting data on this, am still not totally sure it only happens in Eve. I need to run the computer for several hours without Eve running to see if it happens then.
2) As others have reported in various Mac forums and the Apple support website, I have occasional video display problems - flickered banding, and periodic (short, <1 sec) blackouts. Also, sometimes the screen image will be slightly scrolled so that the dock is now at the top of the screen, about 3 inches down from the top. Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) resolves it for a while. For example, I reset my SMC two days ago, and the problem has not recurred since.
I would interested in hearing experiences others may have had with the newest iMacs.

I have been considering purchasing one of these. I'm curious on the heat output when Eve is running. Will it heat a small room in wintery Michigan on it's own? How about fan noise?

My temps (celsius) as reported by iStat are: HD: 51 CPU: 48 Ambient: 20 GPU Diode: 81 GPU Heatsink: 79 Mem Controller: 63 Northbridge: 79 Optical Drive: 50 Power Supply 2: 74
This is with Eve running, computer has been running for about 4 hours. The case is warm to the touch, not burning hot. Feels good on my cold hands these cool Wyoming mornings. :)
Fan(s) are not noticeable. In fact, I'm surprised the fans don't run a little faster at these temps. The CPU fan runs a steady 939 rpm.
I ran smcFanControl for a couple of days, boosted fan speeds and dropped the GPU and CPU temps about 9-10 degrees. But, given the other problems I am having, I stopped running smcFanControl to reduce the number of unknowns.
I have read that silicon chips will run up to 105C before failing. I have no idea if that is true. These temps are high enough that I have questions, but I also try to have faith that Apple did thermal testing on these configurations. This is the most powerful graphics card I have ever owned, so I have no personal history to know if these temps are in the expected/normal range. Perhaps others can comment.
When I run 2 or 3 clients simultaneously, the temps seem to stay at this level.
Hope that helps.

I have one of the first intel iMacs, 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo. My GPU diode always runs with EVE on between 80-85 degrees C, this is likely normal and the SMC will kick up fan speed if it does get hotter than what Apple considers the upper limit. I wouldn't be too concerned.

That's why you buy ram from a third party.

Or skip it all together because you won't be using it all.

Can you give more stats on frame rate for 1 client at fullscreen max detail. I'm guessing you have the top end i7 model? So like stats for in station, in space, in fleet (specify size of fleet and wether you have brackets on or off), etc. Really interested in the performance gains of the i7 which should be significant. My hack with Q6600 @ 3Ghz and 9600GT manages 60fps at 2048x1152 fullscreen in station and at least 30'ish in a modest size fleet of say 25 - 30 ships (brackets off). Just based on the integer performance I was estimating the i7 should see at least 75% improvement over that. Anyway, thanks for the info.

For temps, you only really need to worry about the ambient temp on the iMacs when it runs high you need to give the machine better ventilation. I have the 24" 2008 iMac, and run at a peak of 80¦ to a low of 40¦ on components, but with an ambient of 24¦. One thing the iMacs do well is cooling. ^-^

I usually run several applications together, although not more than one EVE client [I dare not see if I can actually run two (although I should easily be able to), I might be tempted to get another account].
Cores never become warmer than 32 degrees Celcius.
The problems with the graphics is not something you should be seeing. I haven't heard about the Dock moving to the top of the screen, that's absurd. Have you been creative with hardware/software?
