I think we all agree with Duvolle Labs and want to see the Deimos as an up-close-and-personal blasterboat.
So, in order to get into range the Deimos needs to be fast. Imho it needs to be the second fastest HAC. Only the Vagabond should be faster. This is currently not the case. The Zealot has a higher base speed (261:248 why?) and about the same MWD speed (1654:1657). The Vaga outshines both, naturally, at 373 / 2484.
Imho the Deimos should be positioned somewhere inbetween, not at the level of the much more versatile Zealot. For example just swapping around Zealot and Deimos base speed would do quite a bit.
Does the Zealot need it's speed? Not really. It's mostly used in a sniper role these days. Does the Deimos need it's speed? Hell yes.
Now the secons part. Fitting If those three ships (for simplicity reasons I'll stick to those three) fit their race's highest caliber guns, the following amount of powergrid remains: Zealot: 436 Deimos: 283 (361 with Ion II) Vagabond: 210 (408 with 220mm II)
While dropping down from 425's to 220's isn't a big issue for the Vagabond, and even rather the norm due to similar damage, more ammo capacity and especially better tracking, the downgrade from Neutrons to Ions on the Deimos means a painful hit on damage and range. Especially range. And as you can see, even after downgrading the Deimos has the smallest amount of powergrid available, although it has a free 'utility' highslot which wants to be filled, preferably with a medium Nosferatu, since MWD burns cap, blasters burn cap, you're in close range so you can't avoid a neutralizer, and you don't have spare mid slots for a cap booster..
Zealot has range, Vagabond has speed, Deimos has... well, it would actually need some buffer, because let's be honest, "up-close-and-personal" doesn't only mean you deal damage, it also means you'll be receiving it.
Speaking of speed and reveiving damage. Can someone explain to me why the Deimos has such a huge signature? Zealot: 125 Deimos: 160 (!) Vagabond: 115 You either blow up that signature even more with a (crappy) shield tank, or you fit plates and lose speed.
Then last but not least there's damage. Zealot with Hvy pulse: 301 Deimos with Neutrons: 319 (Ion 301) Vagabond with 425's: 235 (220's 225)
These numbers are not meant as representatives for realistical fits or whatever. They are just meant to show the relation between these three ships.
And it shows one thing perfectly: Right now you're better off dealing damage in a Zealot than in a Deimos. This is in addition to any popular sniper roles.. It's more versatile, offers the same damage at longer range, smaller signature, higher base speed, and doesn't have a wasted high slot. The Vagabond in turn doesn't offer the damage, but fills it's own unique role as a fast and agile speedboat.
In summary, the Deimos needs at least two out of these three to be competetive: - More speed - More free powergrid - More damage
At least when downgrading to Ions it should be possible to fit a Medium Nos and a 800mm plate. But not even that's possible. I'm not even thinking about asking for Neutrons, 1600mm and Medium Nos.
Ok, some people might now say that it's supposed to be a glass cannon and 'fills that role' well. But it's dps are not superior in any meaningful way. I think if that's really what the Deimos is supposed to be, then it seriously lacks some damage. And speed..
