Looking at plugging some crystals in, i can see low grade sets that go for about 500-600 mill, and high grade sets are about 2.1 bill.
Price of high grade, with low grade omega would be about 1.2 bill and seems the best price point for the bonus that you get.
What are the actual stats of the bonus of a full HG set, LG set and HG ( with LG omega)?

Bonus for HG set with LG Omega: Hell if I know.
Information comes from here, you can do the math yourself if you like.
ED: As for the question of whether they're worth it or not...I've never complained! Though the predominate opinion is that missioning is easy enough that you should go with +5 stat implants instead. PVPing with Crystals in is ballsy, but not totally stupid in lowsec.

ooo thanks :D
Seems the bonus from HG + LG omega comes out at roughly 44%
might be the best option - what do other people think?

That you can tank L4s without them just fine, that using them in PvP (or in L5s, or in non-highsec PvE of any kind) is a surefire way to your own tears eventually, that they're almost completely useless on capital ships (because capital shield boosters are not affected by them, and not using a capital shield booster on a shield-tanked capital is quite silly) and that I wouldn't want to use them instead of +5 attribute implants anyway.
Right... not really the answer you were expecting, but meh... you asked.

Was about to say that LG and HG dont mix, but then this clarified things:
"Notes:
* Incomplete sets still give amplified bonus. E.g. one low-grade and one regular implant plus the regular omega would give a 1.1 x 1.15 x 1.5 = 1.8975 set bonus multiplier. * Mixed low-grade and regular implants yield figures somewhere between the low-grade and regular ones. "

Akita T's response is the one I was expecting. And it makes plenty of sense.
But assuming you have balls of steel and you're PVPing, I'd recommend the LG version...I've heard some fun stories about the Cyclone and its cousins with them. You don't get podded often in lowsec if you know what you're doing, but it does still happen, and losing the HG version will make you one sad panda. You can buy about two full LG sets for the price of HG and LG Omega.
Cost-effective PVP matters to most of us.

Edited by: Cpt Branko on 10/11/2009 00:04:29 The likelihood of losing implants in low-sec/empire is low enough, combined with the cheapness of LG sets, that they really are worth it.
I am a horrendous cheapskate when it came to actual ships/fits, but no reason to avoid implants really.

I think a full Hi-grade crystal set gives somewhere around a 50% bonus to shield boost amount.

for PvP you'd have to be very rich. You dont want to be putting all yr eggs in one basket. Remember there are pod killers out there. Bubbles and ultra fast locking ceptors' in roaming gangs whos sole job is to kill pods. Check out the kill boards on battleclinic, some people specialise in killing pods.
what to avoid: Crow
highs: 3x standard missile launcher II mids: 2x sensor booster II with Scan Resolution scripts and a 24km scram lows: some speed stuff

Most caldari ships produce better tanks as pure buffer anyway. I'd only recomend active tanking the select line of minmatar ships that get a bonus to it.
Of course if you're flying in a nearly solo situation and can fit enough gank with the active setup then go for it.

yes crystals are worth it if you live in low sec or you PvE. With crystals+blue pill+burn you can get a pretty insane tank, the other great thing about crystals is that it increases boost amount rather than decreasing duration so your cap is the same. Also for PvE if you have crystals and a faction/plex booster you can spend more of your mids on tp's/tc's.

So, other active tanking ships - especially the NH / Vult / Rokh or even CNRs, Nightmares and Rattles etc cannot use them? Do not over-specify things. Yes, working with ships directly bonused for boosting amount already is effective, but high resists help too, along with other factors.
Also, tho implants are destroyable, are sure not lootable, so if I could some-how split the cost of a super-duper deadspace booster into an implant set and a lower meta lvl booster with similar performance, is not that a bad idea. While true, a crystal tengu is simply nuts and solves the disadvantages of the sleipnir (also nut with crystals) ***The EVE servers and their patches*** |

As long as you aren't dieing to a smartbombing battleship, you can't really get podded in low/high sec if you're spamming warp to celestial as you're about to die, so they're pretty safe to use. Active tanking shield PvP setups are rather limited to a few ships though in effectiveness, so it's a rather niche investment.

Never Fly anything (or with anything in your head) that you can't afford to lose. You will lose anything you undock in EVE sooner or later.
That boring piece of Zen like wisdom out of the way.
Crystals + Active Shield Tank + Blue Pills = Pure Tears for the people trying to kill you. It's damn funny watching multiple BS's banging away and you keep repping and laughing. Good for all sizes of ships with active tanks but the risk of getting your pod tackled goes up when you use smaller/fight smaller stuff.
Just don't do stupid crap in small ships with them in since thats a damn good way to lose em.

I fly with both HG Slaves and HG Crystals, depending on my ship of choice for the day. It's really kinda cheesy, but it's fun pushing sub-par ships to nice heights with implants. The Ferox is fun as hell with Crystals.
