Edited by: Lady Spank on 10/11/2009 14:38:32 lol hit enter.... my first in years. one sec...
I was tooling in wormhole space and thought I would check out some of the sites available there, this being 3 scans deep into wormhole space with no one else seemingly around.
I am clueless when it comes to mining but I was wondering about the size of these rocks. And these too
This is over 2 different sites and they all have a radius of 16255.6
Is this particularly large? I am used to seeing the rocks available in low sec and the belts don't look anything like as impressive as this belt did.
I am guessing I found an untouched Class 6 wormhole that had been waiting for the right person to come along.
Just curious and thanks for your time

That's a C5 system right there (looked it up from your screenshot).
And those are nice and big roids, Core sites are the better ones. I don't know how to calculate the ore content from the radius though, I usually just use a scanner. In the little C1-3 systems I often probe out I've found up to 15k units of Ark in one belt (valued at ~130M or so in that roid alone, depending on the current market value and refining skills). I can remember atleast 3 times myself and a couple other highsec miners have taken Mammys/Rets/Covies in and pulled out 140-220M in a couple hours of mining just a fraction of the ore there.

Thanks for the information, it's interesting to me.
Hearing that you can pull profits like that really makes me wonder why people put up with mining in high sec. I guess it's the security and ease. I could almost imagine mining being fun if conducted in wormholes and needing more logistics and teamwork.

The profits are impressive, but think also of the risks. Losing your Hulk and implants to stealth bomber hunting pack can hurt your margins

In current times it sounds more likely to happen in high sec than in a secluded wormhole :)

Edited by: Gavin DeVries on 10/11/2009 20:42:14 It happens in both, but the big problem with wormhole mining is the logistics. In one single Unexceptional Frontier Deposit in a class 2 system recently we had 2 Crokite rocks: one of 60,000 units and one of 25,000 units. At 16 m3 per unit, that 85,000 Crokite is 1.36 million m3 of ore. A Corporate Hangar Array can hold a total of 1.4 million. Freighters can't get in/out of class 2 systems. An Orca can potentially hold about 200k m3 with the new ore bay, but in class 2 holes you can only reasonably make 3 trips in and out before the hole is in danger of collapsing. So the choices are:
1) use an Intensive Refining Array to refine the ore in the wormhole at a POS, losing 25% of the minerals in the process, 2) make multiple trips out, perhaps over several days, hauling over 1 million m3 of ore out to an NPC station where it can be refined with nearly no loss, or 3) build a Rorqual in the hole to compress the ore, making hauling tremendously easier but requiring a hefty investment of capital.
But those sizes aren't unusual for wormhole space. One gravimetric site in a wormhole can easily yield over 1 billion ISK worth of ore. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

It's like a whole new game this mining business. Maybe I should try it.
Thanks for the replies ♥

Actually, if u dont mind a little more time, u can take rigged and cargo industrails carrying ore. u can carry about 3x as much ore through with industrials than with orca's, because industrials have a greatly reduced mass than an orca. so u can get more ore out of a wh with industrials before it collapses.

There was a spreadsheet published on S&I a few months ago (june/july) where someone had sat down and worked out the maths to convert radius to volume, it was pretty acurate with a +/-1% variation.
As people have said mining in wormholes is a logistics nightmare unless you process the ore in a WH, even then shipping the refined mins can be a royal pain. Hopefully CCP decides to launch a PoS Ore compression module that will allow you to compress ore the same as a rorqual, and make it anchorable in W-Space only.

Yes, it has a corp hangar.

Just wondering if it could be profitable to mine solo (no alt accounts) in a wormhole (not having a pos). Anyone tried this?

If my math is correct, with max skills and a pair of +5% implants, a Hulk set up for cargo rather than mining yield can pull in 89 Arkonor per strip miner per cycle using T2 crystals. That's 4272 m3 every 3 minutes, and said Hulk can hold 17199 m3 total. You'll fill up roughly every 12 minutes. Assuming you spend 6 minutes flying out of the wormhole to an NPC station, unloading, and getting back to the grav site, you'll get 17088 m3 every 18 minutes. If you assume 400 ISK per m3 on Arkonor, you can make about 380,000 ISK per minute, or 22.78 million per hour. If you use the same Hulk but have one alt doing the hauling for you, 4272 every 3 minutes comes out to 34.176 million per hour. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

problem is the radius doesnt change even if you mine it down to 1 unit
