Hello, I am a miner. I mine all day and I normally wait to sell on the market when it shows in the green. Anyway, I was just reading that I should not even instant sell on the market and I should post my ore at my own prices. Should I stop selling on the market and make contracts for my ore and sell it openly? Should I find a corp that buys ore and try to sell to the same people? I am just confused and want to make sure I am getting the best prices for my labor. If anyone can provide some type of list about the best prices for each ore that would be appreciated also. I know it fluctuates, but any idea would be nice. Thank you.

First, you usually don't want to sell your ore. You'll want to refine the ore and sell it for more as minerals. When you are first starting out, selling the ore may give you better prices, but work on your Refining skills to maximize your income. Also, you can compare what minerals you would get after refine and the prices you can sell those at with what you can sell your ore at.
Exception to above rule is Omber or Kernite at certain Lvl 4 storyline mission stations. A certain storyline requires Omber or Kernite and the ore itself will sell well in those stations.
You probably don't want to sell the minerals in the same system you mine them. The best high sec ore will be found in 0.5 systems (true sec of 0.46, if you can find it). The best prices for your minerals will be at a trade hub (such as Jita, Amarr or Rens, more found in the MD stickies). However, you'll have to factor in the time it takes you to get the minerals to that market, though, to see if it is worth it for you.
Putting the minerals up in your own sell orders can sell better if people are buying from sell orders. Depends on your area. People may just wait on buy orders to be filled. Selling the minerals to a buy order will get you your cash quicker, though.

Edited by: Vormic on 10/11/2009 15:19:14 That is very interesting. I am not a new player. I can fly a hulk and a freighter and my refining skills are maxed. I always thought you made more from selling the ore? I guess it just shows how much there is to learn even if you have played for awhile. I like your idea about Jita and I think I will haul all my ore/or refined minerals there and see how that works out.

refine and sell your own ore, either by making sale orders or hauling to jita. If you're selling quantity and don't mind waiting setting up orders is the way to go as it gets hauling out of the way. Another thing you can do is buy ore within a few systems. Just make a buy order for a small amount (over existing orders obviously) and you can make somewhere between 200%-500% depending just by refining and reselling the mats. You're not the only one who was selling ore at less than the mineral worth, get some of those lost profits back . Just make sure you keep the buy area low, in a range you don't mind moving. You're going to end up with a lot of places with just 100 ore, unless you do a min buy amount.
Anyways have fun with it, and while you're mining you may as well get your trade skills up and play in the market as well. No reason you can't buy and sell while you stare at roids. ________________________________________________ ôI would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.ö -Thomas Jefferson |

You should REAAAALLLY learn to crunch the numbers. The best way to it, is to use Excel sheets for it. Study what minerals ores break down to, what are their buy and sell prices on the market, get to know the whole picture.

Will tell you what ore type, REFINED makes you the most money per hour based on jita prices on the minerals.
No ore ever will make you more money than it would make refined really. ------ Dare to challenge me? |

See my earlier post about omber and kernite in Lvl 4 storyline mission stations. If demand is high enough, that can be greater than refine value.
Also ore might be more valuable to sell, depending on area, if you are really new and don't have any refining skills.
Other than those two caveats, you are right.

If you have maxed refine skills, 6.7+ standings at a nearby refinery and a freighter, the skills to reduce broker fees and taxes, and most Importantly a good location, you may be able to maximize your profits doing it all yourself. Just keep in mind, it takes a LOT of time (which = money as the adage goes), to run a freighter to a refinery, then a hub, and back. Think of the ore you could have mined in those hours, now think of the value of that ore. Catch 22 of mining I suppose.

In high sec, it's much easier to make profit doing it yourself. In 0.0, you could be right, I have no idea.
