Seriously...
6 months ago, chars with 65msp+ were going for about 20b...at least.
These days its hard to find 25b for a 90msp char.
And 40msp chars are going for 7b.]
can someone clarify what happened???

Prices changed?
Possibly, the supply and/or demand changed.

PLEX/GTC ISK price dropped. "SP cost" is linked to those to a degree. Also, demand drop and supply increase.

Alot of those el-cheapo characters are also hi-jacked accounts that they are trying to move isk through real fast, including attempting to sale the character

Perfect storm happened.
Unholy rage: no more cheap illicit isk took some of the irl cash ---> character buyers off the market. ---> reduced demand
Characters too profitable: before the spike in plex prices and subsequent drop in character prices, it was insanely profitable to farm characters with plex and then sell them, even after accounting for $20 fee. (did the math then, but, thankfully never got into it myself because I was very busy in RL for the next week, and by then plex's had spiked)----> increased supply
Too many high sp characters: less of a rarity premium for ultra-high sp characters and more people going "have all the sp I'll ever want, might as well train up an alt" ---> increased supply
Plex spike and then drop: plex spike got people to close accounts, sell alts, and made character prices spike up. When they dropped, they dropped from further up, and there was a slight weakening in demand and increase in supply. Furthermore, when plex prices went back down it lowered the value of creating sp, debasing character value and because the upward trend finally had its back broken, all speculative investors fled the character market, further decreasing demand and increasing supply.

Edited by: The AEther on 10/11/2009 22:18:13 PLEXes are selling cheapest now than they have ever sold. When they were just introduced, in June'08, a few initial ones sold for 250-260 mil ISK and then the price went up to 300, 350 mil per PLEX eventually spiking at around 420 mil ISK at the start of this last summer. Then by August they went down to 280 mil ISK per PLEX.
Farmer ISK meanwhile has become more than twice as expensive to purchase. With the banning of gold farming in China and banning of thousands of ISK farmers in game by CCP, ISK has climbed to about $50-60 per bil from $20-30 per bil that it cost half a year ago. Another effect of this is that the number of account phishing attempts and account hacks has spiked, I have never seen it be so bad before, and successfully stolen accounts (read characters) are probably selling at some farmer websites for ridiculously low prices increasing the supply of chars available for sale to those at least who don't read the EULA (and there are quite a few of them).
I haven't investigated average current going price for characters per 1 mil sp so I haven't done any calculations on this, but somebody in another thread noted that character value in real life money hasn't changed. ISK right now costs more in money than it has ever since PLEXes were introduced, hence buyers are able to purchase less of it and aren't willing to pay out as much of it. For comparison, about 1.5 years ago when we had 30 and 90 game time codes and legally purchased ISK cost $80-90 per bil (right now it costs $60-65 per bil) characters were selling at 150-280 mil per 1 mil sp ;)
