To be honest I'm not a big fan of the "CCP should do this!" type threads, but I think this is a good idea so I'm going to share it with you all. Basically its an idea to allow emails to be sent from outside the the game to a player in the game. It would be useful for things like php or asp backends to pages which are used in the IGB, allowing them to mail a char. This is how i see it working.....
First you sign up for an evemail account under your username, and you give an EveMailID and an EveMailPassword. This is done through the Eve insider, and the data is stored as a simple database. Say my EveMailID is "1337" and my password is "RAH" for the purposes of this example. Now say I wanted to use a php backend to send an evemail to rowbin hod. Rowbin hod's char id is 691076777. So the php composes an email to [email protected], and importantly includes 2 headers, used to authenticate the sender of the email: - EveMailID: 1337 EveMailPassword: RAH
there's a mail server which collects all the emails sent to @evemail.eve-online.com. It checks for the presence of the correct headers, if they are not there or don't correspond to an evemail account then the mail is binned. If they are correct then the email is parsed into a format which can be used by the eve bcakend, then inserted into the game.
obviously the evemails sent from a particular accout can be monitored for volume of messages to ensure spamming does not occur. Any such abuse of the system can be delt with in an appropriate way.
Anyone like this idea? --- "Due to the European lard shortage, we are currently unable to supply this product." |

It's an ok idea but just think of all the 'Enlarge your alt's p***s size!', 'Caldari Viagra!', 'Nigerian Oil Company needs to deposit 20BN ISK in your AC' spammage.

Heh, easy to create spam this way
While you can stop the abuse afterwards, it's pretty insane because you could make a script run and send to
ID: 100000000001 ID: 100000000002 ... ... ... ID: 999999999999
Which would send a mail to every single player in EVE (I guess, give or take a digit in the above numbers), some would end up in void but still every CHARACTER would get a mail

Yes but remember, to be sent the sender has to supply their EveMailId and EveMailPassword, which is tied to their account. That sort of behaviour could result in some kind of ban as a punishment. Or just do as they do now and charge you 100 isk per message!
I like the idea but I get enough eve-mail as it is without people not in game being able to do it.

Shrug, for spam purposes you'd need to use whitelisting (in-game only).
Don't really see the point.
Now, tying Eve chat into an IM service...

Easy to circumvent.
You are a spammer that wants to send a message to 50.000 subscribers (maybe 30.000 unique individuals?).
You sign up for one month for $15 and get your message out. Not a bad person-per-dollar ration. Account suspended, no problem.
Or even easier, you get a free trial and use that. No expense and no big deal if the account was banned.

the only feasible way i thought of external mail was to have it as a full account benefit which accesses your evemail via a webmail interface here on eve-insider. Its not email, just an external evemail system.
you can put flood protection on it easy enough.

I agree, all that's needed is out of game access to Eve-mail, not emailable Eve-mail (er, if that makes sense and I didn't invent too many words).

Any spam you'd get would be from someone within the EVE community whom you gave your password to. The additional authentication layer would not allow outside spam for pen!s enlargement or Italian Rolexs, and if someone within the EVE community was sending you un-wanted mail, you could simply change your E-mail auth password and not give them the new one.
That said, however, I do not see how it would be very useful.
