Originally by: Ztor Edited by: Ztor on 05/11/2004 22:24:44 I have a bit of gaming experience. I played EQ for 4-5 years and DAOC for 2. I also played SWG for about 1 month and COH for about 2-3 weeks.
After 14 days here is my 1st impression of the game:
1. The people I interacted with online were very nice and helpful. Additionally the forums here are very informative and many of the people here answered my newbie questions. For that I say thanks.
2. I decided to not buy the game and here are the reasons.
First the mouse interface is awkward. Trying to set the range in combat involves dealing with 3 windows that sometime close before you can click on the right one.
One of the features I liked in DAOC was a keyboard "autoface" and the fact that you autotargeted anyone that attacked you. This combination allowed you target and face an enemy in pvp in less than 1 second. And range was also done with the keyboard.
Another mildly annoying play feature was not having a toolbar where you could put all the high medium and low slots you need to activate and deactivate. You could toggle these with the keyboard, but I favor a toolbar so you can actually see that the power activated. And see them all in one place.
In combat I did not feel like I was the pilot of the ship. Cannot really put a finger on it, but it was too impersonal.
The wait before docking and jumping was aggravating and the fact that afterburners turn off meant you could not afk and use them when you were traveling a long way. In safe space, I do not see the reason for this delay.
Another big turnoff to me was the race I randomly picked was involved in slavery. I know it is just a game, but it was a turnoff. And I find it a bit offensive that corpses can be looted and sold as well. Make it dog tags or something else if people need some kind of trophy.
This final post is not meant to slam this game, but to provide some insight to why 1 person moved on. I know I only played 11 days and barely scratched the content of the game. Good luck to everyone that loves this game, and thanks to EVE for allowing a free trial.

Seconded, Same applies to Nox.
Ztor: Well, I can just repeat what most other people said. Try again after 17th of November. Most of your interface issues will be fixed then. On the other things you mentioned: Well, EVE is a game that takes it's time. be it traveling, mining or whatever. Regarding the slavery issue: Well, just because Amarrians generally are involved in slavery, that doesn't eman all of them are. You, e.g. don't ahve to, if you don't want to.

Doesnt work! It only locks back the first npc pirate! And if it would work, what would the auto targeting modules be for? Please dont give advice on things you don't know about.
If it doesn't work: maybe with your lack of skills you can only target one shiphave, the ships that target you are out of your targeting range that your ship can handle Or maybe you couldn't find it at all in Generic Options. And there is no Autotargeting module only modules to give you ship more targeting slots but if your skills cant handle it its a useless 400k worth of crap modules. oh ALT or 3 months old n00b you can go back to your room now.
Your right about the auto targeting in generic, that auto locks people who have locked you.
An auto-targeter (module) locks incoming missiles and gives you +3 targets.

Am I the only person who read this as meaning he would like to "turn on" an AB or MWD so that when he drops out of warp, it automatically boosts him to the gate... so that he can use the MWD or AB with ONE (1) click at the beginning of his 50+ jump autopilot afk trip? just wondering if that might have been what he was getting at there...
all the other points have been thoroughly addressed though. |

"In combat I did not feel like I was the pilot of the ship. Cannot really put a finger on it, but it was too impersonal."
This is about the only valid point you made i would agree with, the rest have been covered by others fairly well, and seem to be a lack fo your game experience, which is understandable since this game is quite deep and complex.
I pin the lack of feel being the very rudimentary point and click interface for controlling your ship and the fact that due to the scale they choose for combat you often end up fighting "icons" on the screen instead of the great looking ships they designed.
This is my biggest issue with eve, great looking game but ultimately i end up fighting icons unless i want to look at target forevery fight which makes my ship be the icon, and i loose the sound...
Should add a sound for hitting :)
I refer to this problem in eve as i feel to much like a spectator and not enough like a player not sure how they could fix it, I know for me added a wads type of control would go ALONG way to making me feel alot more like i was piloting the ship.
Eve is a game i really want to like, and do to a degree but I just keep wanting to feel more like a player of a game instead of a spectator of a space sim :(

Hey,
I've been playing about 3 months now. I can say, it's very hard at the start. Learning curve is huge.
Once you get into it, you can see how awesome this game is.
I am so glad I took my friends advice to try it for a month. Just give one month a go, only $15. Join a corp, get some skills.
I've been at war now two weeks, thats been my best two weeks on EVE since I jonied. PVP is simply awesome.

Before you leave, let me just say this: The game is exponentially better once you join a helpful, fun corporation at war with a respectful, mature enemy. Nothing defines EVE like fighting next to your buddies in battle.

I see a lot of people mention PvP, here, and in the "what is there to do?" thread(s) so I have a question. As another 14-day-newbie, I think this might be a good place to ask it...
I'm not really into PvP. I'll probably try it eventually, may even like it some, but can't see myself ever seriously being into it. I don't want to argue about PvE vs PvP or anything like that. I'm just more of a PvE type player, regardless of what anyone thinks of that. So, does that mean EVE isn't really a good MMO for me?

There are different kinds of PvP. Sometimes, like with DAOC, you never talk to your enemy or even get close enough to look at them. Sometimes, PvP is in your face with lots of immature "smack talk" like with Counter-strike. EVE is almost a combination of the 2, depending on who you are fighting against and beside. My PvP within EVE is a respectful, yet highly competative version. I started EVE for the PvE and ISK making challenge, once I got tired of that I learned what EVE is truly about..... PvP.
Give real, mature, fun PvP a chance before you skip out for another game. If you need exposure let me know in-game. Either us, our allies, or our enemies (whom we are friends with many of them) will have something for you to watch/participate in.
