I was wondering if anyone does this on a laptop with a USB wireless connection service like verizon.
Im looking at the max allowed 5g monthly and that seems not enough to play or am I wrong?
I really would like to play at work when its slow like tonight and I know all my corpies are in the game and I'm stuck at work with a boss that doesnt allow me to download the game on company computers :(

Apparently eve can run just fine off the lulz bandwidth of a 56k dialup so your 5 gigs should be safe.

Edited by: The Mag on 14/11/2009 08:49:56 This is 5G downloading and uploading limit per month not 5G speed as I understand it.
The company has a intranet and will not recognize my laptop to allow me internet access.

Guess I'm trying to say that I don't think you could even download 5 gigs in a single billing period off a 56k line so you should be just fine. I think the data rate is super small at around 3~10kb/s so you could stay logged in as much as you want.

Thats assuming that his line speed is only 56k. Wireless broadband though Verizon ranges: Fast downloads û typical speeds of 600 to 1.4Mbps. Fast uploads û typical speeds of 500 to 800 Kbps.
But all in all you should have no problems playing eve if you don't download to many eve-online videos.

Edited by: Haakelen on 14/11/2009 15:09:19 Eve uses very minor amounts of bandwidth, especially if you stay out of hubs. I can guarantee that you won't hit the 5G cap doing only Eve during business hours.
I've played Eve on a 8.7kbit analog cellular connection before. Login takes a little while, but it works just fine after that. The killer is the 5-6 second latency. But if you're just going to chill in a low-activity channel, it's more than adequate. Paying for it was unfortunate, but luckily it wasn't my bill . Next time I have access to an Iridium satellite phone on someone else's tab I'll see if I can't try that. Should be fairly painful, though.

I play from work all the time on a cheap acer laptop. I use Sprint Mobile Broadband. never have problems with latency and after a 8 hour shift I usually use about 80mb... thats right megabits worth of bandwidth. Eve can be played on the analog connection too just so you know, but the 3G speeds are best for doing anything other than ship-spinning.
The views expressed above are not those of my corp or an expression of where my corp stands.

Beeing able to run on a 56k line shows the good network code. Compared to Battlefield 2 with over a 100MB per hour __________________________________________________

Meh - I log in at work to check buy / sell orders. You dont really need a USB modem unless you have a really anal network in your office.
I just punch a hole using a VPN and keep on playing as the LAN has ports closed.
Works for me.

If you have a decent wireless connection like my phone has in most city area's you can get between 100 and 250 kb/s. If i setup my phone as a modem i can get 1MB+ (connected to my pc) _ But TBH I dont give a flying ****

Or you could get a job where your boss is a Caldari missile-boat jockey, and willinging spends half an hour on Monday morning discussing the weekend's roams in 0.0. And working an ISP, we have to "test" connection issues that our customers may be having with EvE, so have a client running in the background. Oh, the torture!
(Posted from work )
For the OP though: EvE runs fine on a low-bandwidth connection (I wouldn't try and use Voice or go blob-roaming with 150 other pilots though) so if you've got a 5Gb quota for the month, you should be fine. Flavan Ardene System

Using four samples it seems EVE transfers something around 0.5kB/s which equates to around 5kbit/s bandwidth. However, mining veldspar is probably not the most bandwidth intense activity in EVE

I'm on a cellular connection: i get speeds between 56Kb/s and 1.5 Mb/s depending on weather, sunspots and whether or not i lean out of the window, laptop in hand.
Over a month, with about 3hrs browsing, 2 hours Eve per day on average, I rarely go over 2Gb for the month.
Semi related :Had no connection at all for the last three days, was going to complain then realized they'd upgraded the cell towers and now my signal is three times stronger (and faster)

Wait, what?!? 56k still exists? I thought 56k was lost to us when the meteor killed the dinasours. I heard someone recently found a 65 million year old fossil of a 56k modem in Montana. Was very exciting. Now if you'll excuse me, my 400 mhz desktop is starting to smoke
