Does anyone have any suggestions for replacing my headset? I Had the Creative Fatality headset and they broke today. I have tried a few, but I am open to suggestions. I am not really into the hook over the ear style tbh. That just gets annoying after a while. Best Buy stopped selling the Creative line, so much for easy replacement. I tried out the Razer Carcharias. They sound ok, but Vent doesnÆt seem to like them. I guess the easy solution would be to get another pair of Creative Fatality headsets by mail. But, before I go down that road, I would like to hear what a few peopleÆs favorite headsets are.
Thanks in advance

I use a Sennhiser PC151. They offer excellent sound and literally a flawless mic. Picked mine up for ú40. They are also reasonably comfortable seeing that i wear them all day on my computer and never feel uncomfortable. ------------------------------------- Don't click the links or even the forum topics. |

Definately a Sennheiser. I tried several headsets over the years, everything from bloody cheap to bloody expensive and my current one is the first I’m really happy with. It’s an older model, the PC 151, but the recent top-end models are just to darn expensive for me. ----------------------------- OMG THE SKY IS FALLING! Contract me all your stuff so I can save it! |

Yeah... itÆs too bad. I like the way the Creative headsets feel and have never had a problem with the sound. Having said that, I don't think they could have found a cheaper way to make them or found cheaper materials in which to make them. They took a fall the wrong way on the floor and the earpiece snapped off. It sounds like the Sennheisers are pretty solid in terms of comfort and performance. Would you still recommend the PC 151s or another model?
And is there any particular benefit to having a USB connection Vs. 3.5mm jacks?

I made the mistake and splashed my wad on Sennheiser PC 350 pro, sure, they are comfortable and all, but the complete lack of bass makes them not worth the cost.
As far as usb vs. 3.5mm jack goes, with usb you can have 2 different sound outputs, 1 from the usb headset and 1 from the 3.5mm jack to speakers for example.
Of course, if you are planning to use the headset with other appliances besides computer (or with more exotic OS's than windows), then go with the more universal 3.5mm jack.

I use a SteelSeries Siberia Neckband for all my gaming and listening to music.
The sound quality is that good I even take it with me if I go out running or if I'm making long journeys to plug into my cellphone as an MP3 player. (it uses 3.5mm standard jacks for both the headphones and mic)
Awesome bit of kit and its unbelievably comfortable compared to a normal headset.

I have to chime in here, though I don't use Sennhaiser, I use a over-the-head Plantronics/Altec Lansing headset, It's called a "Gamecom".
It's a bit large, but sounds really good and I love how the boom mike folds INTO the headband and doesn't stick out anywhere.
As to USB vs 3.5 - just remember this: USB headsets work by having a digital decoder built INTO THE HEADSET, that's how they work without a soundcard. Any hitches in USB data transmission, and you get broken/scratchy sound. Same if you have a flaky USB power connections, a real problem is you use "self-powered" hubs. Ones with 3.5" jacks can be a little inconvenient to use if you r case doesn't have 3.5" front jacks - luckily, most do these days - and ARE dependent on your computer having a sound card or integrated sound. Thone can sound weird depending on how your system is, and what your sound card is.
Other than that, there's not much to choose.

Have a Sennheiser PC350, needed to get used to a bit but it's very good. Only downside is that it's a closed model which means you don't 'hear' yourself talking very much, making it a bit odd.

I've got a sennheiser HD 555 myself ( no mic ) and they're extremely comfortable and have very good sound quality.
So I'm betting the PC 350 would be a good choice.
One thing you should be warned about, every brand of headphones has their own distinct sound, sennheiser more so then others and it does take some getting used too. I've been using sennheisers for like 10 years now, and I really can't stand other brands anymore.

If you're referring to the normal headphones they do then you're in for a shock. It's nowhere NEAR the quality of that.

Protip: Don't buy a headset with a neckband, if you are going to wear glasses. It's a tight fit around the ears.

Some headsets have both. The 3.5mm jack is normally used to connect the headset with the USB "soundcard", which you plug into the USB port.
I have one of those (Sennheiser, don't know which model) and I'm using the 3.5mm jack, because USB sound becomes distorted after some time. Apparently, Sennheiser USB soundcards suck.
On the other hand, I have an analog 5.1 system connected to my onboard soundcard, With such a setup, you will want USB.

Ironically, USB sound is very well supported on Linux. It is onboard sound which stops working with every distribution upgrade, and those few people who still have a soundcard these days are also complaining. If you want your headset to work on Linux, USB is the way to go.

I like the way the Creative Fatality headset feel and sound. I will say that. Unfortunately, these are the ones I am replacing due to their fragility. I donÆt abuse my gear. But when they canÆt take the odd drop from desk height without falling apart, it raises questions. They just are not made to last. I am tempted to buy them again, but I know I will be kicking myself when they break again. lol
I tried the Sennhiser 350s about a year ago. I loved how they looked and their construction. I was not impressed that much with the sound. The higher cost of the 350s sealed the deal. They went back to the store. I would be interested in trying the Sennhiser PC 166 USBs. Does anyone use these?

I just replaced my Steelseries 5H v.2 with a set of Plantronics 770. The Steelseries to date is the most comfortable headset I've ever owned, but the Plantronics come in at a close second. And sound quality on the Plantronics is on a completely different level. They also come with a little Dolby usb dongle, so you can use them with that or 3.5mm jacks.
Incidentally, prior to the Steelseries, I had the Sennheiser 151, returned after 2 days. Most uncomfortable thing I ever owned.

Go to your local walmart and pick up a set of these.

Quite possibly the best gaming headset I have ever bought as it seems to dissapear as soon as you adjust them to fit your head no matter how long you wear them. The sound quality is pretty damn good and can achive a painfully high voulume level and still play clear plus the mic captures only your voice and not the background crap. Also only $19.99 which is stupidly cheap for what you get as I already have a set of Bose and the only thing the cyberaudios lack is super deep base but this is actually a bonus for games with a bass heavy sound mix so you can actually hear all the subtler stuff like footsteps in cod4 or not have your ears bleed from missile hits in eve if you actually have sound on.

I bought a Triton AX Pro headset for my Xbox, and it works great for my PC too. The surround sound was critical for FPSes, which is why I got it. The only thing is that the detachable mic only hooks up on side.

I use a set of audio technica ath-a700s to listen to music when playing eve. since it doesn't have a mic, i just use a cheap clip on one for vent. the headphones are comfortable (though they can get a bit warm after a few hours) and the sound quality is good. (I don't really have any thing to compare them to in my experience.)

I bought a pair of plantronics recently. I'm pleased with them. They're comfortable enough for extended wear and I like that the mic boom is flexible and long enough to be in front of your mouth so you can speak really low and people still hear you. For $29 on sale they were a deal as they generally sold for $40 - $45. Sound quality is good for low-end headsets.

I've been using a Koss headset for the past two years and am quite pleased with them. Not only are they comfortable and have well balanced sound, Koss has a lifetime warranty on their headsets - no questions asked. http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p?openform&pc^mm^SB49 - the model I own. My son uses the same model, and he broke the mic on his - returned it and had a new headset within 2 weeks for the cost of shipping.
