Hello guys.
Im planning to go to the Eve Fan fest 2010 in Iceland next year and would like to ask the guys who were there before from around the world to share their experience here and let me know how was it and what to expect, how to do things like cheap flights(I'm form Sydney - Australia) accommodation, restaurants, what to do there, where to go and what to visit, how many days would be enough to take the holiday, how much $ would one need for the whole holiday there/how much $ did u spent last time - the hole trip , how many persons were u paying for/wife/kids... etc.
If there is any info like this already pls just give me some kinks. Thank you guys!

I spent about $2000 (USD, not AUD mind you) in total on FF09, stayed just under a week (Wed -> Mon). But my flight was most likely significantly cheaper than yours will be (From Norway) ---

I haven't been to Fanfest yet, but I'm planning to go in 2010. Since the date of fanfest isn't announced till late in the year, we can't book the really cheap seats 12 months in advance. The cheapest I could find for October next year are about $2500 return to Paris (there were cheaper routes that involved a 24 hour layover in Dubai). The cheapest flight I could find to Iceland from Europe was about Ē700 (~$AUD1100).
Numbers I've seen from people elsewhere indicate that if you want to stay in a hotel you'll be paying about $1000 for the time that you're there for Fanfest - that's just the four days in Iceland.
So if you want to go just for Fanfest, you're looking at about $5000 per person ex-Sydney. Budget for more (allow for an extra $2000 sitting in your credit card account for cancellation/upgrade on emergency return tickets).
I'm currently researching river cruises, but the news is not good - most of the reviews I've read indicate that in September/October we'll likely be spending most of the trip in busses. Plan B is to spend a week in Paris and another week in Budapest. My partner won't let me go to fanfest if we're not going to do something "useful" with the trip!
Hope this helps.

Sorry, no trolling. Travel to the antipodes is actually quite expensive. The prices I quoted are economy class (ie: a seat that is narrower than most people's hips), the business or first class tickets are about $16k.
One could of course fly Air China for about a third of the price, booking 12 months in advance. Unfortunately the date for Fanfest is not fixed, nor is it advertised 12 months in advance.

it's not cheap, however the exchange rate at the moment is great for Aussies. As someone else mentioned, due to them not announcing when fanfest is until a couple of months before it's hard to get cheap flights, but you may be able to get some cheap flights to LA/NYC and fly to Reyk from there. The trip is much longer, but ends up being cheaper. ----------------------

Thanks guys, that's amazing how expensive it can sometimes a flight ticket be. Two month ago .. in October, i flew to Europe (Rome) from Sydney and i had return tickets booked since February at AU$ 1,800. Same flight would have been like AU$4000 in different month or closer time frame.
The idea of flying LA or NY isn't that bad idea, i might make a stop there for a few days. Anyone have an idea of how much a LA/NY ticket is ? How about from LA to Reikjavik/Island?
Anyone can share some experience of what have u done there in Iceland .. other then the obvious get drunk? LOL Places to see .. and stuff?
Thank you guys for sharring. _________________________________________________

I went to my first FF this year. I had a great time and flew direct from Seattle. My friend and I booked a package deal. I think getting there and back with stay at the Grand Hotel, (pretty nice btw, and couldnĘt be much closer to the venue.) ran somewhere around $1200 give or take. That was for five nights. I would like to go again, but now I would know what to do. First, book travel and stay separate. The package, while convenient, can add a couple hundred extra to the total. I stayed at the Grand Hotel and I liked it. The staff where very friendly and the rooms where very clean. I am not sure if they have FF at the same venue, but it was about a seven minute walk to FF from the hotel which is situated a bit away from the downtown core. This was nice if you are into sleeping when you want to sleep. If you stay in the middle of the downtown core, it can be quite loud at night, and the walk to the venue will be a bit longer. All and all itĘs not a huge city though. You have the option to grab a cab to get where you need to go as well.
You will spend more money depending on what you do outside of FF. You can choose to eat Pizza hut or KFC, (sorry no more McDonnalds) the whole time, and go on the cheap. Or you can go to restaurants and have a better variety. I did a mix of both and didnĘt spend too much. And I think the Grand Hotel has an option to include breakfast with the stay. We did this and It worked out well. One less thing to worry about, and it was good to boot.
My friend and I decided to take a day off FF and go on an ATV tour that combined running around the landscape with ATVs and ended up with a stop at the Blue Lagoon. Both very fun and well worth it. They are also in very close proximity to one another. The ATV was about $130 usd and the Blue Lagoon was not that much, maybe around $20-30. DonĘt be scared off by bad weather. We did both the ATV tour and trip to the Lagoon in a sort of foul weather gale. Rain, high wind, and maybe a bit of sleet made for a FUN time. No seriously! They provide Overalls, Boots, and Gloves on the ATV tour, so you stay mostly dry. But who cares? You get into the water at the Blue Lagoon and all is good!
The Lagoon is set up a bit like a spa. You get there; you can eat in the nice restaurant, or grab a sandwich at the cafT there. Then you check in, put your stuff in a locker, shower off, and head to the Lagoon. It was awesome. All this wind and a bit of rain and sleet, but once you are in the water, none of that matters. Bring some conditioner for your hair though. That water makes your hair feel like hay when you get out. They have all that there for you in the locker room, but you canĘt have enough. Lol. You will understand once you have been there. This is the one non FF that we did, and it was well worth every penny.
We might have done a bit more outside of FF, but during the Pub Crawl, my friend impaired with much Vodka, had a spirited discussion with Hostiles about politics and got blobbed. LOL. We had become separated during the Pub Crawl and I figured that we would meet up at another bar. Long story shortą he got back to the Hotel deep into structure and required much repping in order to move about. He was able to attest to the fine treatment of the local Hospital and Police services. DonĘt worry, concord was not after him, just the Red Blinkies. DonĘt let me scare you though. There is very little in the way of real crime in Iceland. But when 0500 hrs rolls around, and you are good and liquored up, it is time to go home.
Overall, I had a real blast! Met a lot of cool people and saw a lot of cool things.

Edited by: Dagrin RDM on 16/11/2009 07:06:21 Been to Fanfest 3 times now, and had a great time each year!
Stayed at the Hotel Bjork my first year, nothing fancy (the shower was TINY!) but clean, and breakfast incuded. Probably a 10 or so minute walk from the venue. Stay at the Hilton Nordica the last couple years, nice rooms, close to the venue, great breakfast spread, and the lounge always seemed to have eve players in it, a nice little social hub when things were getting started.
If you are looking for things to see or do, there are several tour operators in Reykjavik. I've basically dealt with Reykjavik excursions, but haven't heard anything negative about the other guys...they were just the first ones I found. (www.re.is is thier website)
Some of the tours I've taken:
Reykjavik Grand Excursion - a short bus tour of the city, including a visit to Perlan, Hallgrfmskirkja and the National Museum of Iceland. Not a mandatory tour, as you can go to all those places yourself, but it's nice to have a guide.
Golden Circle Tour - This one takes a good 8 hrs or so, highlights include Gulfoss waterfall, Geysir, and Thingvellir. I loved this tour, and took a TON of pictures.
Saga Circle - I'd like to take this one again, because when I went, it was a new tour for them, and the hadn't worked out all the bugs, and one of the museums wasn't open :( Still a fascinating bit of history, and the first time I tried lamb (stew).
I also went on a whale watching tour with Elding (www.elding.is). Very cool, after I got over the whole seasickness thing (they do offer anti-seasickness pills, I just didn't take one in time)
And I have to agree, the Blue Lagoon is a must!
There are also other museums and such in the city itself (most of which I have yet to visit, but I will get to them, someday)
And of course, there's Fanfest itself! A collection of overweight, pasty faced computer nerds who consider internet spaceships SERIOUS BUSINESS!!!!11one!one

Actually, Fanfest is a great time with a lot of (generally) good and friendly people. I like to joke that Fanfest is the greatest NAPfest in all of Eve, because (with a few stupid exceptions) people leave their pixellated differences in the game, and get together to celebrate the game we enjoy. And to drink. Sometimes to drink a lot. And sometimes to drink more than a lot, and pass out in the streets of Iceland.
Just going to visit Iceland is a worthwhile trip (IMO), but add Fanfest to the mix, and it makes it even better.
edit : I just hope they announce the dates a bit earlier this year..I would make it a lot easier to book the time off at work.

Hello Tiberius, i will go to the point.
1) You will need 4 days to get a clue of iceland + 3 for fanfest. So a whole week is perfect. Do not go to Hotels, iceland is full of gusthouses, cheaper, easy to find a room anywhere cause FF is not in prime summer time and people is nice up there. This way u can save a lot $ in accomodation and food (appartments has wifi, micro and all you need to cook) 2) You must do: Blue lagoon, Snowmobile in glacier and 1 tour (i recomend you golden circle or something that packs a lot). 3) Hire a car,4x4. WIll enable you to visit and roam with your wife at convenience and is not expensive. By the time being this year i was able to drive all over the place, not much ice or snow on roads. 4) Be sure you have an international id card up to date, a credit card (no debit card) and some insurance for you ( in spain is call seguridad social id, to go to hospital u know : P) 5) Be ready to drink and enjoy at all times. 6) Please be a nice guy, and bring a costume for the party at the top of the world (This year me and my wife were the only ones i saw with a costume besides ccp staff...i was a nice amarrian monk with a minmatar slave lost in the crowd). 7) Price with all this stuff, fly, food and **** was 2990 euros for me and wife (some gifts included). 8) Everything is quite straight forward after day 1. You will love the island. Despite people can drink and be nasty at night is a secure island dude...believe it you can go anywhere anytime nothing will harm you if you dont talk to "drunk" zealots eve-related.
i do hope to see you there next year. I am goin back for sure.
PD: One final tip, while goin with your wife is fun, i saw some corporations attend in great numbers, and they did amazing things in groups.....so talk with your corp and plan ahead.

Edited by: Aumani on 16/11/2009 20:14:17 Definitely try to stay close to the venue. We stayed at one of the hotels further out and spent way too much on taxi rides. We eventually rented a car and it worked out quite well. (Especially since my wife was there and could use it during the day to site see.) I think we will try the Nordica next year.
Over all we (wife and I) probably spent 4k USD but a large part of that was spent in NYC on the trip up and on the way back.
Either way it is well worth the money to go. Even without Fan Fest, Iceland is fantastic.

In the UK, Icelandair better put on some fights from places other than London this year. Driving all the way down the country to then fly all the way back up is ridiculous.
Manchester or Liverpool would be nice.
