Howdy,
Following on from previous idea. I've been thinking about how it might be possible to solve window clutter in the game, without having to constantly move, close or minimise the windows manually. I came up with this idea.
Each window in the game would have a corresponding icon, when a window is opened the icon appears on the screen, always where it was positioned last. Hovering over this icon expands the window to reveal its contents, and moving off of the window causes it to contract back down to an icon. I imagine the player would choose the wait time before the window expands or contracts. By having these small icons near the centre and not on the edge or the corners of the screen, the focus is kept where the action is. Sometimes you might want to keep a window open, in which case pinning the window will keep it expanded even if you move outside its frame. The idea is that the window is open and accessible simply by hovering over the icon with the cursor, but does not clutter the screen when itĘs not directly in use.
Currently to open a window (ignoring keyboard shortcuts) means moving to the side or bottom to click the button, then minimising, resizing or moving them around to get them out of the way, then moving to the bottom to maximise them when you need them again. Do you really need the cargo window open when you're not currently using it? I personally only have it open when I'm actively looking or sorting stuff in my cargo hold, where my cursor is usually inside the window, or when dragging stuff from other windows. If you make it possible to drag items onto the cargo icon instead you don't need to have the whole window cluttering the screen.
To solve the problem of windows being confined by the screen edge, the window would need to dynamically expand in whichever direction is available; an icon placed at the bottom hand of the screen would need to expand up more then down.
Ideas and opinions welcome.

It does look quite awesome. I'm not sure about keeping them in the centre of the screen. Having windows opening when you mouse over a icon during combat could be a problem. But if people were free to position them where they want it would be great.

Really cool idea
It's important as you say to have the ability to lock the window open, as you often want to have more than one window open in certain parts of the game. I think a double click on the icon would be an intuitive way of holding it open.

Edited by: Xonus Calimar on 17/11/2009 14:27:48 Seems like a good idea to me, a lot more visually based than the current UI. As long as things like where the windows are positioned and how long they stay open can be set by the user, I think its a great start. This, and your previous idea, seem to favor a more touch-based interface as well, with larger icons and click-able areas. ___________________________________ My opinions may not necessarily reflect the opinions of my Corporation or Alliance. |

To expand a little on the "drag and drop across windows without having both windows open" option I got thinking of a demo the Surface and figured that it would work really great if dragging and dropping when the cursor with the dragged object is over a icon that can accept the object than the object opens (or at leasts opens a little) allowing me to get a glimpse of the contents of that window (maybe I wanted to drag the wreck stuff to a cargo container I set aside, maybe I'm in a station and wanted to put the object into my station bay and not my cargo bay but the icons look similar). This way it both increases the likely hood I did what I wanted to do the first time and improves the visual asthetics a bit.

I like the general look of it.
As for window behavoir, I'd like to see it do this:
Icon for inaccessable containers be translucent. Once in range, either because it's your own hold, a container in your hold, or an object in space that is close enough, the icon becomes solid.
Hovering over an icon (adjustable time?) causes the window to open on the screen translucent. Clicking the icon locks the window open (instantly opening it if it was not already open due to long hover time), and makes the window solid (adjustable, setting for mouse over and locked). Moving the cursor into the window when it opens automatically will keep the window open, allowing drag and drop, automatically closing as soon as the cursor moves out of the window.

Love the focus idea, something like a mouse over would open it rather than double clicking and maybe missing and moving ur ship by accident.
